Fine budget accommodations
OK for a glorified youth hostel. In line with the general price level in the two Russian capitals, you’ll pay twice than what you would for a similar level of comfort in Tallinn or Prague. Service and safety were satisfactory, and the staff very friendly; just don’t expect more than a youth hostel.

Very Comfortable
Hotel Olympia was a very good place to stay, even for a first time visitor to St. Petersburg. The room was very spacious, the beds comfortable, and at night the surrounding city was very quiet. They offered a very good breakfast each morning and had good cable TV in the room. The staff arranged a private tour guide for me and ordered a taxi to take me to the airport. The only problem was that the phone in my room had a bad connection, making it difficult to talk to people, but it was only a minor inconvenience. This hotel was very affordable and would recommend it to anyone.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
If you want to save some money on food, there are countless little 24-hour supermarkets all over the city where you can buy fruit, bread, beverages, alcohol, cured meats, yogurt, cheese, and sweets for very low prices.
