Nice, but Misleading
I booked a stay with Chalet Kilauea Collection not realizing that this encompasses multiple properties. My stay was actually a room in a house several blocks away from the office (and any other hotels), so it was pretty isolated. This is not bad, in it of itself, but I was traveling alone and found it a little creepy when I drove up to an empty house in the middle of nowhere and knew I had to sleep there. It turned out there were other people staying in the building, but I probably would not have made the reservation if I knew there was not a front desk (and security) in the same building as me. Dont get me wrong, the room itself was very nice, clean, and comfortable. And if you are looking for a isolated place to get away it is perfect. But just make sure you know which building you you be staying in, and what its features are.

Cheap room with shared bathroom
I stayed Volcano Hale, a guest house which was one block from the main building. My room smelled like it hadnt been aired out in a while. The bed also felt a bit moist. Other than that, the room was clean, and the shared bathroom was decent and had enough soap bars and towels. Restaurants and shops are only 5 min away, and the national park is about 10 min away. All guests have access to a common area in the main building, with TV, an internet PC, free wireless internet, and couches. If youre on a budget, and are just looking for a place to sleep, this could be what youre looking for.
