Pretty good hotel at a reasonable price in a good location
Mercure Grand is nothing fancy, but compared with the other hotels in the corniche area, it is quite reasonably priced, has a great location near downtown, the souqs, and the airport, and is fairly clean and modern. I stayed there two nights (Friday/Saturday). The staff was helpful and attentive. The room was simple but clean and comfortable; I especially enjoyed the balcony that looked over the pool (quite nice looking) towards the corniche (about a 10-15 walk). The immediate environs were busy with shops and souqs. The hotel has free wifi and a decent restaurant. It appears to have been recently modernized, although only partially so, but it is by no means the rat trap Ive heard it described in other reviews.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
If you only have a day or two to see Doha, dont miss the Islamic Art Museum (design by I.M. Pei). The corniche in general is the focus of the city and is quite a lovely place to stroll, with opportunities for dining and boat rides along the way. The souqs are always good fun if you like that sort of thing. The giant mall (Doha City Center) is worth a look but is really just a mall. FOOT TRAFFIC IS DIFFICULT except on the corniche -- take cabs.

Three nights in Doha
Had a business trip to Doha and stayed at this hotel. Choosen due to proximity to business I was visiting. In older section of town. Stayed on 12th floor. Good comfortable bed, free bottld water. Shower was nice and valet coffe/tea service in room. Had extrememly goo room service dinner and also did breakfast each monring. A bit expensive for breakfaast but very good selection- something for everyone. Nice looking pool but did not use. Very helpful staff and generally a quite location.

Average, Standard Hotel
Room is a standard US style motel room, nothing too fancy, but comfortable. Reception desk service wasnt the greatest, wasnt interested in offering assistance. Wireless did not work in my room, so I had to go to the lobby. Pub on the 12th floor did not have a non-smoking area. Not the best part of the city, but I never felt insecure.
