A reasonable choice
The hotel was well-maintained and the staff attempted to be helpful. Unfortunately, they didnt seem to be able to help you with your travel plans if you had any questions. A big benefit was the fact that they had free use of a computer located in the lobby. The location was decent, but if you wanted to go to the city center you definitely needed to take either a taxi or a bus. The morning buffet breakfast was quite good, and the service was attentive. Considering the price of other hotels in Tiberias, the price was reasonable.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The Tiberias Travel Information Center located in the center of the city was very unhelpful. The woman who manned the information desk was disinterested and had a negative attitude. Other tourists we met had the same complaint.

Not Fancy, but Helpful staff, Good Breakfast
The room we were first given had an odor and didnt seem too clean. They gave us another room that was much better, and the man at the desk personally checked out the room we rejected. The folks at the desk and in the breakfast room were all very helpful and friendly. Not fancy, but thats why you save money. We were fortunate to have a decent view in the second room they gave us, otherwise it could have been a bit depressing. But we werent there to see a hotel room, and it was a great place to sleep and start each day. They also have free wireless internet in the lobby.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
I have to say that I kept looking for the nice part of Tiberias at dinnertime, but Im not sure there is one. We did have a very nice grilled fish dinner down along the lake with all the vegetable dishes to dip your pita bread in. And we appreciated the nice folks at the little italian restaurant when everything else was closed on Shabat.

Bargain Basement
The best thing to say about Astoria was the price. We booked because the Expedia average ratings were pretty high. In reality, even less expensive hotels in Israel are usually clean -- our room had hairs in the bathtub and material from the previous occupant not found or removed. Service was fine. Coffee at breakfast the worst I have ever tasted.
