Hotel Patria

I stayed at the Patria while waiting for an overnight train en route to Budapest. The hotel is three blocks (about 400 meters) from the train station. I took a cab, not knowing where I was going, which cost about 500 Florints (five USD). The next morning, I simply walked back to the train station. It took five minutes. The hotel is clean -- very clean -- and quiet. They have free internet service in the lobby, and it worked very well. The front desk person was pleasant, spoke multiple languages (English, Hungarian -- of course -- and German). And the hotel was quite inexpensive. I did not make use of the facilities, as I was simply on a stopover. But my sense was that this is a darned good place. I’d go there again.

Traveler's tip on dining

The hotel’s eating facilities were closed when I got into town (around 10:00 PM), but there are some decent cafes and restaurants just one block away. It’s safe to walk around at night. I had a serviceable bowl of pasta and a glass of red wine at a local pizza joint -- perfect travel fare.
