Off the beaten track
Casa Marconi was very clean and well-maintained, had a convenient restaurant next door, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The only caveat was that the hotel was far from a main road and a hike from the train station; not recommended for those traveling with luggage and without a car. Otherwise, good price for the value.
The Casa Marconi restaurant next to the hotel was great for families, especially as there were no other dining options nearby.

Exactly as advertized
This hotel delivers exactly what is advertized. My room had a bed, desk and a bathroom (with a cramped shower--even for European standards). The hotel is part of Palermo Univeristy and is filled with college students. The breakfast was good and the room had a television (some reviewers said there was none). The room was clean and the staff friendly and spoke English. I was in Sicily to conduct research, so was not concerned with creature comforts, but I would not recomend the hotel to a vacationer. Also, the parking garage is a few blocks away.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Get a GPS tracker. Palermo (and almost all cities in Siicly) has no street signs and the traffic patterns are confusing. I spent a few hours lost in the city before finding a police officer who spoke English.
