Great location for sightseers!
Location is always my main concern when booking a hotel, and the Barcelo Carlton didnt disappoint! I believe we were about a half-block off of the Royal Mile, the main tourism stretch. It was a pleasant walk to Edinburgh Castle and the other sites in Old Town. There were plenty of restaurants in the area, including a Pizza Express right next door. New Town and plenty of non-souvenir shopping were also a very easy walk away. When I contacted the hotel to inquire about transportation from the airport, I was told to take a cab, and that it would run about 20 pounds. However, I opted to take the AirLink bus from the airport (you can purchase tickets near the baggage claim) and a round-trip fare was less than 10 pounds. The buses leave every 10 minutes or so, beginning around 4 a.m. The drop-off/pick-up for the bus was also a very easy walk from the hotel, about 4-5 blocks, maybe? The hotel is in a beautiful building and the lobby is very nice. The room was "standard" but comfortable and clean. Quite a bit of noise from the street came in the room at night, even with the window closed. The staff was kind and helpful.

Edinburgh great location to bus and train station
Hotel is within a reasonable walking distance from the bus station, train station, and sights. Lots of shopping and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Good place to stay
Staff was very helpful. No air conditioning so we had to open the windows which let in black soot from environmental polution. Not the cleanest city. Room was comfortable though.
Traveler's tip on dining
Try Vittoria Restaurant On The Walk or On The Bridge. An Edinburgh resident took us to both.
