Downtown Cancun Winner

05/09 We were looking for a one night stay at a different Downtown hotel before our timeshare check in. Many trips to Cancun and stays downtown have given a comfort w/ "lesser" hotels, considering a usual one night stay, but a larger group this time had me looking for something better and still affordable. This da place! Great location(restaurants/bars),nice little pool, friendly staff and quieter rooms(just ask).It was closed the next day after our stay to convert it to a "Radison Hotel" or property. We’ll see what happens!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Economy(due to irresponsible swine flu reporting)etc, have forced a lot of businesses to close. the remaining are very very happy to have you. Always Pay close attention to taxi fares, ask first and dont hesitate to ask more than one cab "how much?" or negotiate.

Cute hotel in the heart of Cancun

This hotel was really nice. Clean and small but with everything you need. Its location puts you right in the middle of downtown Cancun and you can see a less touristy Cancun. It is much more of an authentic experience.

Good place to rest your head

I stayed at this hotel the night before my family arrived in Cancun. I was beat from almost 2 days of flying from Afghanistan. The fornt desk put me in room 214 which had a beautiful balcony overlooking the square below. The room was spotless, if oddly shaped, and the aircon worked great. The only drawback was the loud disco, Ego, across the street, but I was so tired, even that eventually went away. The buffet breakfast the next morning was great and I really anjoyed my evening here. It is not more than two star, but it IS clean and friendly. Great value for the price.

Good and bad points

The good news: the hotel is in a great location. It is located in a safe part of downtown next to a bunch of cheap and authentic Mexican bars, restaurants, shops and a large flea market. You can make cheap international phone calls next door. This area is better than the hotel zone, which is mainly chain restaurants that are more expensive and less appealing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There were also two free internet computers. The pool is pretty nice. The bad news: My first room had bugs in the bathroom. The second room appeared to have mold by the air conditioner. Every day my swipe card key would stop working at noon and I would have to get it re-swiped at the front desk. I had a balcony but it was next to a large industrial fan so sitting outside was kind of noisy. The courtyard with the pool also smelled a little funny.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

You can get very cheap food and souvenirs at the large flea market located a block from the hotel. The public bus is a great way to get to the beach for 50 cents. If you want to get to Puerto Juarez to take a ferry there’s a mini bus that will take you for five pesos.

in downtown cancun

If you are short in money but want to enjoy your vacation in Cancun, I would def stay in this hotel. We ended up saving a lot of money not staying at hotel zone, but instead went on lots of tours. It is bit of a trip to go to beach (walk 5-10min to the bus stop, and ride on bus for 10-15min to hotel zone), but other than that it is good place to enjoy local Mexican culture.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

We found some really good resturants nearby hotel. Especially I recommend you to go spend an evening at "Pericos" (a block away from the hotel). It is cheaper than hotel zone, with better atmosphere. Hope you all ENJOY!!

good location

This hotel is in a good location in CanCun if you want to shop at the market. And it is one of the lowest priced hotels in CanCun. There are some good restaurants nearby and the neighborhood is typical Mexican town. You can easily get taxis to get to the airport ($25). The room was clean--pretty spare. There is a small swimming pool. In summary, it is fine for the price.

Ok, But Avoid on Weekends

Hotel Review: I had read reviews of the hotel and thought I would request a room on an upper floor in the rear of the hotel away from the discos and bars of the main drag....even so.....Saturday night was like trying to sleep in a disco going full blast until almost 6:00am. No sleep....nada!!! (I assume Fri. is the same)Not to mention doors slamming all night.Perhaps for a business trip during the week it would be a good buy. Rooms Ok...beds Mexican hard...clean...breakfast buffet good...restaurant great location and nice relaxing pool area in rear. Much better food choices for lunch or dinner a few steps away. You must supply your own purified water...none in room, but a cooler at end of each hall where you can refill bottles free. Phone calls to the US....Don’t use hotel phones. $6.00 USD/min. Next door is an internet cafe open ’till 2am from which you can call the US no hassle and for under 20 cents/ minute. The famous Market 28 is a short walk away. I stayed here Dec./08

Not a bad place to stay

We stayed at this hotel on our last night in Mexico, after a week-long visit to the Cancun and Mayan Riviera areas. Finding the hotel was a little difficult, but check-in was fast and easy, even though we showed up almost an hour before normal check-in time. The room wasn’t fancy, but had the basics (bed, bathroom, TV). The only downside was the loud music and other noises coming from nearby nightclubs that apparently stay open all night. We didn’t notice a swimming pool at the hotel, but they do offer a shuttle to the beaches for a small fee--we didn’t check out this service, however.

Traveler's tip on dining

We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant--it was pretty good food, and reasonably priced.

great location

this quaint hotel was located perfectly for us. we wanted some local flavor yet were easily able to hop on a bus and check out the hot spots. the bus station was only 2 blocks away so we were able to by a ticket for about $1.50 USD each to our final destination of puerto morelos. taking the bus is definately the best economical way to go for day travel compared to taxis which will charge about $35 USD. the hotel just had the basics but the personal service and advice was excellent. the on site restaurant was very nice to be able to grab a nice sit down breakfast buffet and be on our way.

we were fortunate to have stayed on a sunday night and just happened to walk into a large plaza that has a family friendly "saturday market" feel to it. lots of locals, food, and seemed very family friendly. there was a circus clown act...there are a couple small parks with a few pieces of playground equipment on the way to the main street where the buses come through. for 8 pesos, hop on a route 1 bus to go through downtown over to hotel row.

No alarm clock, no bath matts, no wash cloths and no hand towels. A very LOUD bar accross the street. Partiers screeming until 5:00 a.m.

Great Hotel with Exceptional Customer Service and Very Clean!

I have stayed at this hotel several times and feel like a family member when I arrive. Being greeted and welcomed back by Ricardo and check-in by the new (and great addition) Ezequiel was flawless. This hotel is very clean and the Executive Housekeeper is always everywhere and making sure the hotel is spotless. Maria, my housekeeper was always with a smile and ready to service my room as I left for breakfast in the hotels restaurant. This too is very nice and you can sit on the patio and enjoy the surroundings. I work in the hotel industry in California and can be tough as I know what guests expect and this hotel is a MUST VISIT!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

This hotel is downtown and not in the costly "Hotel Zone" but its very close to the bus station and city busses travel continually and without a problem to visit and enjoy all the sites and destinations.

Okey if you want to stay in down town for the locals experience

The hotel is okey if you want the Locals experience, friendly, clean away from the tourist and the beach so it’s quite a ways from the beach. Breakfast was cheap compared to Hotel Zone okey if you are just there for business.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Your right smack in the down town where the locals shop so everything is about 5% cheaper than hotel zone.

Nice folks...

The staff was very nice, they spoke enough English to help us with directions. If you rent a car and drive to the hotel, unless you have GPS I guarantee you will drive past it and have to drive around the block. The sign for the hotel doesn’t stand out and the hotel is set a little back from the street. The parking is free but you do have to get the security guard to open the gate for you whenever you want in/out, which wasn’t a hassle because he was usually stationed at the front. The pool was nice & clean. The cleaning staff was awesome. The beds were a tad hard but then again I prefer mattresses of the extra soft & billowy type. Across the street there is a club named "Ego" and those folks like to party, if you have a room that faces the street you will hear the music and the fellas whistling at the ladies. If you are a light sleeper (I could sleep through a hurricane), request a room pool side or go down the street to Walmart or the drugstore and buy ear plugs. There are some great restaurants within 5 minutes walk of the hotel. The Arab taco place across the street is really good & cheap. Also, the El Tacolote down the street with an odd cartoon chicken out in front is awesome and they speak English. Drink the hot chocolate at the hotel restaurant, it is to die for and order a Horchata drink, which is available at most places, it is a white drink that looks like milk but it is water, ground rice, and a little sugar that is oh soo delicious and refreshing:)

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Watch out for shifty gas sation attendents, they will rip you off (watch the meter constantly and do not talk to them)!! If you go to a cenote be careful because there are bats in the caves and their poop makes the ground slippery. If you drive on the libre (free way) be extra careful when approaching the towns because they have topes (speed bumps) and not all of them are labeled. Be safe and happy travels.

Good tourist class hotel

Spent two nights in late April at Margaritas. Pretty much what I expected based on the reviews read. I would rate it a good 2 star tourist class hotel. The room was spacious, air conditioned and clean. The bathroom was a little worse for wear with cracked tiles and some peeling paint on the vanity but the shower had pressure and the water was hot. The beds were good although the linen was a little threadbare. The tv was operational but the controls were messed up...the phones were out of service for the first evening. Internet access is not wireless....there is a small office area where you can pay to use the internet. The pool was small but nice and our room overlooked it. The staff was helpful and we enjoyed breakfast in the lobby cafe. Good location near the bus station and easy access to city bus to the hotel zone and beaches. Our first night there was a Saturday and the area really fills up with locals at the clubs/bars/restaurants. I was a little worried about how noisy the halls were (doors really banged shut and lots of loud voices) as the sounds were not filtered at all by the room door. However, everything was pretty quiet by midnight and we slept well. I would stay at Margaritas again.

Needs more Services

The hotel is nicely located in Downtown Cancun and it is kept clean, needs some maintenance and remodeling, but it looks clean. The TV’s do not have remote and have missing bottons. They really need to have wireless internet access at least at the lobby level. I had a hard time with that. As a consequence, I might not stay at this hotel again.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

Find a hotel with Internet access, phone access and with amenities like a desk, and do not take a hotel taxi. They usually charge twice the price. Go across the street and flag one yourself for half the price and in no time at all.

Would use again

Good restaurant we ate most of our meals there. Try the steak (beef)fajitas they are very tasty. Realy good buffet breakfast. Staff friendly and cordial. Located in the middle of downtown. Within walking distance to Market 28 and quite a few restaurants. Room had a musty odor that I was able to suppress with the use of potpourri and the stragic placing of incense (I did not however have to light the incense). No WIFI but an internet room available for small fee. Cable TV. Free off street fenced parking for hotel guests.10 min drive to public beaches and hotel zone.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

You may want to bargin at the airport for a free onetime breakfast and free rent a car for the length of time of your stay in exchange sitting through a timeshare presentation. Also There are coupon books available at the airport with good rates on rent a cars if you don’t want to sit through a timeshare presentation.
