Had a great stay
It is across the street from the National Gardens and we could see the Olympic Stadium from our balcony. The concierge helped us plan a day trip to Delphi. The breakfast was fairly extensive and quite inexpensive.
We stayed at the Amalia in late October. It is the very end of the low season before most of Greece steps away from tourism for the winter. We were upgraded for free at this and several of the other hotels in which we stayed because we were there at the very end of the season and the nice suites were vacant. Another quick tip: be sure to discuss the meter or the flat rate with your taxi driver before cabbing it in Greece. 3 of 4 cab drivers tried to gouge us.

great location and nice rooms
the rooms were a good size, clean and nice. the bathrooms were great, especially for greece. good water pressure and a full size tub and a shower head that is mounted above head-height. air conditioning worked well. we stayed in 2 different rooms at 2 parts of our trip, one had a balcony with a wonderful view of the national garden and parlaiment building. when you open the balcony door the traffic sounds are loud but i didnt find it a problem to sleep through when the door is shut. the 2nd room we had for one night before our flight home had no balcony, and a view of the next building, nothing too exciting but not bad. not sure if that window opened or not. it was less noisy not facing the street. tried the breakfast one morning (we didnt get it included in our room) and was very good. the roof garden didnt have any chairs out when we went (may 2009) but we had a balcony so we used that when we wanted to sit outside. people at the desk were helpful with restaurant recommendations and information about the bus to the airport and calling cabs.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Take the X-95 airport express but to syntagma square (2 blocks from amalia). at the airport exit buy bus tickets in a booth on your right for only 3.20 euro.

A good hotel
Amalia was a "good" hotel, and was priced fairly. Most of the staff was friendly, but they did give me some grief about wanting to take breakfast to our room even though I explained that my wife was not feeling well. The rooms were typical for a european hotel; small but clean and modern with hard matresses (every place I stayed had hard beds so be forewarned). Location was good as it was directly across from the national gardens and was about 2 blocks from the bus terminal, metro station, Palace, and Temple of Zeus. The touristy area "Plaka" was about a 10 minute walk away, and the Arcopolis and Parthenon were reasonably close (about 30 minutes walking, but it is up a big hill and is at least 20-30 min from just about anywhere in the touristy areas that surround it).
Traveler's tip on dining
Go to the dessert place on Sintagma Square (where the bus terminal and Metro are located). The name is "Xolzn" (dont ask me how it is pronounced). It has the best desserts I had during my entire trip by far, and many are traditional greek!
