Wouldnt return
Hotel is in a good location - Ave. Mount Royal has funky stores and restaurants. However the hotel itself wasnt very impressive. There was no elevator, so had to lug luggage up 4 flights of stairs. Carpeting was very worn; strong smell of cleaner/air freshener in the halls and room itself. Continental breakfast was very mediocre.
Traveler's tip on dining
Great breakfast place right across the street - no sign, but its called Dustys.

A good deal for those on a budget
Hotel Plateau Royale is a European type hotel. We were on the top floor which was 49 steps up and down since there is no elevator but good exercise- a great view from our window of the cross on Mount Royal. Generally quiet except rush hour in morning and afternoon. Bed was comfy and room clean.Furniture older but TV works great. Staff was extremely helpful including allowing us to get a second chair in the room and putting snacks in their fridge. Location wonderful near university and shopping and restaurant-bar district. Metro handy altho a 10 minute walk. Bixi public bike system closer.
Traveler's tip on recreational activities
MOntreal has dedicated and safe bike lanes and the Bixi public bike system is great. Insert your credit card, figure out how long you want to use the bike (note the 1,50 sign means 1/2 an hour) punch in the secreat name and pull the bike out. Ride and reinsert in one of the dozens (200?) docking stations which are dotted around Montreals tourist spots. Make sure to check that the seat adjustment lever is present. I had a damaged bike and didnt notice until I pulled it out of the dock.

Location, Location, Location
This is one of the few hotels located in the Plateau region near the park and the mountain. The price was reasonable, the bed was comfortable, and the room was clean but Spartan. No frills, not even an alarm clock (though wake call service exists). The bilingual staff was friendly and helpful. So, if its the location you want more than the frills its a good choice.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Bring your own alarm clock.
