Great getaway!!
Great location in a lovely NYC suburb with beautiful grounds. Scenic drives to the north shore of Long Island are within 30 minutes. The Long Island Railroad is within walking distance of the hotel and offers a stress free ride into Penn Station, the heart of New York City in only 30 minutes.

In drastic need of updating
The draw for me to stay at the Garden City Hotel was for nostalgic reasons. Therefore, I did not expect a modern theme. However, even "old school" hotels would be best to upgrade such things as gym equipment, which was no better than adequate, and hair stylists, which would appeal greatly to the "over 60" crowd, but certainly not a young business executive. I had the same experience at the gift shop. I wanted to pick up some gifts, but unfortunately, I didnt have anyone on my list over forty, so I had to go elsewhere. In addition, the prices for some services were outrageous by any standards. I have traveled the world, and never spent four times the amount anywhere else in the world to have my fringe (bangs) trimmed - and rather poorly executed at that! The room was comfortable, but not particularly clean. Room service was pleasant, but housekeeping returned to my room three times while I was getting dressed to ask what time I would be checking out. On one occasion, a male housekeeping staff member started to open the door without knocking while I was completely undressed! Still, most of the staff were quite pleasant and helpful, and Ill bet they would enjoy an upgrade, as well! In fact, even though the gym equipment was dated and well worn and not clean (the equipment was clean, but the floor around each piece was filthy), the trainers were very helpful and polite.
Traveler's tip on dining
The food was adequate, but did not live up to the hype. Get out of the hotel, and walk into downtown Garden City, where there are a dozen really nice restaurants.
