Best option in StLucia for a romantic getaway (no for families)
When we planned our vacation in Sta Lucia, we decided that we did not want to take any resort package such Sandals or any of those. We rented a car and stayed at the Ginger Lily hotel. That was the best thing we could have done. If you want to explore this beautiful island, do not stay at an all-inclusive compound. The hotel was GREAT. There are 11 rooms in a courtyard, which has a swimming pool in the middle. There are tropical gardens all around, the room was huge. The hotel is located across from the access to the main beach in the island. You can walk to the beach and leave all your valuables at the hotel. This hotel is a perfect spot for a romantic escape, not so much for families with kids. If you are a young adventurous couple, the Ginger Lily is your best bet. Even though we enjoyed our time in st Lucia, we were surprised about the attitude of the islanders. They don’t stand out for being as warm as the inhabitants of other places in the Caribbean where I have been before. There is no customer service culture. Restaurants are overpriced, you pay New York city prices and the service is not great at all. We suggest that you do a small grocery shopping and have nice romantic breakfast or snacks at the porch of your room at the hotel (all rooms have porches with hammocks.

Location and size were just right at the Ginger Lily.
Virgie, Natasha and Cynthia/Cheryl (?) were all very pleasant and constantly asked about our needs. The evening of our arrival, one of the air conditioners had a leak. As promised, it was promptly fixed the following morning. Daily maid service was conscientious and sensitive to our needs for beach and bath towels. We were amply supplied with each. We recommended it to relatives who live on the island.

Lots of Bang for the Buck
The Ginger Lily has spacious rooms,a nice courtyard pool, lush vegetation, central locale in the village, walking distance to all needs, including Pigeon Island. There is parking, but I dont recommend driving outside the Rodney Bay-Castries area, except for the main roads. The staff, like most St.Lucians, are friendly, warm, helpful, especially Virgie and CherylLynn-delightful young ladies who fit customer service roles perfectly. And housekeeping made towel animals with fresh flower arrangements on the bed,a treat when we came in tired. The large hole in the bedspread reflected he inns needing a general modernizing. There were no windows, only screens & shutters,so the a/c worked hard to cool.Close the bathroom door for better cooling to sleep. The bed was comfortable, but not the hard pillows.Extra pillows in the closet were better. There is a small cafe and bar;but I never saw it open or anyone there. The front desk clerk will make food or get a beer. There are a coffee maker & tea maker in the room, with beverage supplies,& a local grocery store. We chose to eat at some of the many good restaurants in walking distance. Across the street is Reduit Beach, with snorkeling at the rock jetty a block down.Ginger Lily is everything you need, without the frills.Id recommend it if you want a place to sleep, get information, and take a nice pool swim, most like staying at a small country inn, cats and all.If you want a luxury resort, there are many in the area, but thats not what the Ginger Lily is about.
Traveler's tip on dining
Dinner at The Edge,a special meal, good service, table at waters edge. Expensive, but worth it.Another great meal at Coal Pot,less fussy local food with equal ambiance/service. Slow season,so no problem getting attentive service/ prime tables. We went to the weekly Gros Islet jump-up.It was fun;but dont eat there!Try rough local Bounty Rum,dance in the streets, mingle with the locals, people watch;but dont get sucked in by great smells of grilling food, which are tough, inferior quality.
