Continental Breakfast Service so-so

This is a nice hotel, but the complimentary continental breakfast needs attention. There were no service people to wipe off the tables. This was most unpleasant since they serve waffles and syrup ends up all over the place!

Generally well satisfied

We were most satisfied with the overall hotel service, but with one major exception: As we are both Senior Citizens we encountered a situation which should be corrected. Our room was on the 2nd floor. The hotel does not have elevator service. Consequently going from street level to the 2nd floor was difficult due to the luggage that we had, plus being seniors. In addition, when asking for assistance from the front desk, we were told that was not available. This was the only sad part of our stay.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

It was necessary to really search for a restaurant or eating establishment whose price range was acceptable. Consequently had to go to nearby Ft. Bragg.

It’s ok

Not the best - not the worst. Room was OK - a bit dated TV, bed was comfortable. I think you can get better and cheaper rooms in Ft. Bragg and still be close enough to Mendocino for a good visit. And there are rooms right on the ocean in Ft. Bragg.

Needs to be updated

It needs to be updated, I stayed there 20 years ago and it looked the same but worn out.How ever the room was clean,it is walking distance to down town and they do not require you to stay 2 nights on the weekend, good tip for dinner is the 955 restaurant.

Very nice place

Great location and views, wonderful gardens, and very friendly staff. The only drawback about staying in this hotel was the continental breakfast. We had a choice of either bagels or bagels and only plain bagels at that. Minor drawback though - overall very nice place and I will stay there again.

very nice

The woman who checked us in on Dec 29 was very nice and helpful. Very pleasant stay. I have already recommended it to others and would go back.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Mendocino area is a great spot for walking on the headlands and around town. Lots of beautiful beaches, restaurants and a great independent bookstore that is lovingly tended.

Birthday Weekend

Great hotel with a wonderful view from our ocean view room. Short walk down the hill to Mendocino to shop, eat or visit a museum. Bad cell service so they provide free nationwide long distance.

Traveler's tip on dining

Frankie is a must for pizza, local beers and handmade ice cream. They also have live music on most weekends.

Fantastic Location

Easy access to the town and headlands area. Been to Mendocino five times, always staying up or down the coast. Enjoyed this trip the best because of the easy access to the town. Will stay in town again. The hotel is nice enough, but the main reason to stay there is the location, not the hotel.

Traveler's tip

The Continental Breakfast offered bagels or... bagels. Seriously. And, not great bagels either. Make other arrangements for breakfast!

great location

Perfectly located just a block from downtown, in a beautiful setting. It is an older hotel though. Rooms are big but muggy and they could use a renovation. Fairly pricy!

Traveler's tip on dining

Do not miss Frankies pizza and ice-cream. Home-made wonderful ice-cream. For dinner, best bet is Mendocino cafe (located on their main street). Nice out-door dining experience with very good food! "European style" prepared fish - that is they do not treat the fish as if it is a steak (the usual American way)

Cabot Cove’s gift to Mendocino

The hotel was walking distance from the main town and in very nice, clean condition -- except for the little birds’ nest right over the door to our room, which, of course, meant that we had to be very careful not to walk in droppings. On the plus side, the bathroom sink counter was large and accommodated us well -- something that inns do not always do. I was less happy with the sink placement, which was in the same room as the bed, so that middle-of-the-night bathroom runs required more finesse in washing hands than I would wish at that hour.We were, by the way, told wi-fi was available only in the lobby, but found it worked in our room as well. I assume that must not be true of all rooms. On the whole, though, it was a good stay, and I’d return.

No frills comfortable stay

This hotel seems to be good value for the money given the average rates in the Mendocino area. The rooms are reasonably clean and it is located within walking distance from the small downtown. The restaurant was closed when we stayed, which is a minus. If you are looking for something more luxurious and pampering, this is not the place.

Visit Frankies in downtown, it is very family friendly and they servce great pizza and locally brewed beer as well as wine. Our 1.5 year enjoyed the live music shows.

Peaceful Setting

The hotel is just a couple of blocks away from all the activity on Main Street, but given the small size of Mendocino, it seems very peaceful and remote. The gardens are lovely and the maid service was impressive in its ability to clean our room every morning within a narrow window of time. The hotel management should help the front desk staff understand that customers who reach Mendocino have probably driven quite some time to get there and would appreciate more attentiveness in getting checked in. I was astonished the desk clerk carried on (and on) in a lengthy conversation with a local when we arrived at 7:00pm. We were eager to check in and get to dinner. Part of the charm of Mendocino is the pace of life is slower than that of the Bay Area, but that’s no excuse to fail to provide basic customer service.

web site flawed

the web site showed that they had a restaurent and a bar on site ,neither of which existed . Also they said there were bathrobes with the room, which we received after meeting the owner at the Mendocino Hotel ( after being over charged for our drinks at the bar ).Our stay was a wonderful experience , however, someone more demanding could cause more problems. thank you, John and Nancy.

Nice, would stay again

The hotel landscaping was beautiful. The room was large and comfortable, but was not really an ocean view-it was facing the direction of the ocean, but from the pictures and the advertisement as an "ocean view room" we thought it would be closer to the bluffs. The front staff was polite, but didn’t really go out of their way, which would have been nice as it was our first visit to Mendocino. For the price this is a good choice-and is very close to shopping and dining.

Disappointed

The room needed paint, it had an odor, one door lock was broken, there was no key to the dead bolt, the window appeared to be set so that someone could break in. The expected robes were not in the room and the furniture showed wear and water rings. Expedia stated that the room rate included breakfast and it would be delivered to the room, which the hotel clerk said was an error. The breakfast was at another hotel a few blocks away. It was very disappointing.

Traveler's tip on dining

Cafe Beaujolais is the best restaurant in town - charming and excellent menu.

Good value in a lovely setting

The hotel is very nicely maintained. The setting is beautiful and the hotel has lots of charm. Our ground-floor room was well appointed, had a nice little patio, and the usual amenities.

Traveler's tip on dining

Cafe Beaujolais provided us with an excellent dinner in a comfortable setting right in town. Great food, wonderful service.

Surprise

Slightly out of the mainstream Mendocino, a long walk, but delightful "Cabot Cove" atmosphere. Food service is going through a re-invention, but service and food in their sister Mendocino Hotel property was excellent.

mold in bathroom

We had been camping over the last few days and we were very much looking forward to a clean hot bath. It was disappointing to see mildew all along the tub and shower. For the price charged it should have been immaculant. The hotel staff was anything but friendly and there wasn’t anything in the room to let you know of the services they offered. The breakfast in the hotel restaurant was pretty good however this is not a hotel we would stay in again.

Nice place

The room was just what you want....clean, quiet, and comfortable. The staff was very cordial and helpful with finding things to do, as it was our first trip to Mendocino. The view from the "ocean view" room was distant, but good. The location was also good for walking everywhere you want to go.

Inn with view

Pricey. However the water view makes up for rooms & service.
