great, if you get a good deal on the price

i got a great deal on this hotel during a 24 hour expedia special so for the price it was wonderful. the hotel is located across the street from the hilton and is an easy walk to the cable cars and public transportation. this is an older hotel with a very small and slow elevator also there is no air conditioning. the area to right of the hotel is a little shady i would recommend walking towards the left if walking in front of homeless people is an issue. overall the staff was very helpful and attentive i would go back.

if going for leisure i would recommend getting the citypass, it is less expensive at costco, and taking the bart from the airport.

Nice bargain hotel

We were in San Francisco for the 1st night of our vacation to California, so chose to stay in a cheaper hotel. It was clean and comfortable, staff were helpful. Not the kind of hotel I would have wanted to stay in for our entire vacation (would want more amenities, etc), but well worth a one night stay.

Return Visit

This is my second stay at the Mark Twain. The bathroom was a little tight, but the room was fine, very clean. There is a lot of street noise, but it was better from the 8th floor than from the 3rd. The folks at the front desk were always pleasant and helpful.

Nice Hotel, Slow Plumbing

Hotel Mark Twain was a nice Hotel, centraly located, near theaters, resturants, shopping, site seeing etc. However the plumbing was not so good. The small sink in the bathroom seemed to have been stopped up and we had to flush the toilet 3 times to get it flushed properly or not. That was a little frustrating. However I chalked it up to bad water pressure.Could be the San Francisco city density and hills lots of toilets need to be flushed. Honestly though, I would book with them again. Have fun in the City.I guarantee you will leave your heart there too. And! Go back to find it!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Every thing was located close, shopping dinning, transit, theatre, deli, quick coffe shop just around the corner. Great Tai resurant too, just around the corner from the hotel.

Great Value! Great Location!

I thought it was a great hotel! I liked, in particular, the Mark Twain quotes on the hall windows. The only thing I would have to complain about was that there was only $30 valet parking. The parking garage kitty corner from the hotel wanted $40 but the garage about a block & a half away was $15 overnight if you got your car out by 930am. Thankfully I was only staying one night & the weather was nice to walk.

Traveler's tip on dining

Blondie’s is not what it used to be only 5 years ago. No good! And, every 3 feet is someone begging for money.

Fun Cozy Hotel

The Hotel Mark Twain was quaint and enjoyable. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable of the city. The hotel is close to the cable car line and streetcars. The hotel has a nice bar area and restaurant attached and is near other good restaurants, may need to cab it at night even though we did walk with no problems. Our first time at a small "boutique" hotel, usually go to Las Vegas, and we were very satisfied with the more personable experience.

Street noise, broken elevator

Our room was on the forth floor. Upon return from touring the city we were informed that the only elevator in the building was out of order, not fun to walk up four flights of stairs after walking the hills of San Francisco. The room was fine, clean, and the towels were fluffy. Our room faced the front of the hotel with the street below. The street noise made it sound like our bed was in the middle of the street. When the garbage truck came at 2 AM I thought they were in the room. The single pane windows did nothing to block the street noise. One block down the hill from the hotel is what the locals call the meat grinder. An area populated by vagrants and street people. Not a place a tourist needs to visit or be near.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

If it is your first visit to San Francisco take advantage of one of the tours. You will get a great view of the major points of interest with the ability to return to any that you would like to see more of.

Great value - but...

Good-sized room, kept very clean. Bathroom, however, was minuscule; plumbing may have dated back to Mark Twin himself. Front-desk staff was more helpful & friendly than I’ve experienced at hotels costing three times as much. Location very convenient, walking distance to Union Sq, Chinatown, downtown shopping. But if you go a few feet further away from downtown, you’re in a very seedy area.

Good for the price

Rooms are cheap to San Francisco standards but bevare of extra cost: Valet (only available) parking $28 and an expensive breakfast.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Close to cable car and the downtown.

Surprisingly Spacious for a Boutique Hotel

I arrived at the Mark Twain in San Francisco and was startled by the small lobby and tiny elevator leading up to my assigned room. After navigating down the slender hallway I realized that the majority of the hotels space is allocated to the rooms. I was only there for one night but it is the ideal place to stay for an extended period. In so many hotels there is a wasted hallway between the front door and the living space and at the Mark Twain this room is given to a walk in closet with room for two weeks of clothes. The hotel staff was friendly and the location is great.

Great little hotel

Not luxurious but very comfortable, this hotel is charming and well-located. Right beside Glide Memorial Church, it is close to Union Square and the downtown core. The service was especially gracious and friendly. I intend to stay here next time I visit San Francisco!

Nice Little Place

My friend and I stayed at this hotel the night before we ran the San Francisco Marathon. It was really conveniently located to food, shopping, and the start of the race. The free late checkout option that was helpful for after the race--it gave us enough time to run and get back and shower before packing up. They had valet parking for $25 a night, but that included in and out privelages. Nice little place!!

Noisy

The room was fairly clean. The bed was uncomfortable, could feel & hear the springs in the mattress. The worse thing about the stay was the noise. The walls seemed paper thin... I could clearly hear conversations in the next room, I could also hear voices and noise from the room above me. The worse noise came from the street... I could hear garbage trucks, could hear what people were yelling. It was as if the windows were wide open, of which I didn’t dare open. I was there to run the SF marathon and got very little sleep. I had them change my room to an interior one the next night but that was only a little bit better. Once again, the walls seemed like they were paper thin. My girlfriend was going to get a room there on the last day but decided against it because of my bad experience. She even took a loss because she didn’t call on time to cancel her reservation.

Great digs for the price!

The hotel was exactly as it represented itself and as one reviewer said- as long as you don’t turn right when you go out the front door everything is great! I stayed with a friend for 4 nights and we were very comfortable and well accomodated. Internet service was great. A bit noisy (from the streets) even though we were on the 9th floor.

I would stay again for business and/or pleasure but must admit if I were to bring my kids I would stay somewhere else b/c of the location.

*Best Bang For Your Buck*

I picked this hotel for 3 reasons: price, proximity, & a fridge(It was the only budget hotel that had one). Let me just say having a fridge is a godsend, if you want to save time & money. As far as proximity goes, this hotel is within walking distance of many retail stores, drug stores, fast food joints, restaurants, etc. It is also within walking distance to trains, buses, cable cars & BART that are need to take someone directly to some of the major tourist attractions. Now there are some minor drawbacks. The elevator is so small that you & your luggage will have to go up separately. The room was neat, but small. It was good enough for my 6yr old & me, but no more than 2 adults. Don’t know how much bigger it would be for triple or more. We had a nice view of a brick wall, so day or night was all the same. But if you’re not going to spend much time in the room, it is just a minor annoyance. Please note: There are a lot of homeless people & panhandlers in the area & some reviewers & even the hotel will tell you to go left when exiting the hotel instead of right to avoid being harassed. But in my experience, this was not a problem. I actually had more beggars when I went "left" than "right". After the first day, I went right if I had to go right, I chose not to take the long way around. As I mentioned, I have a 6 yr. old & would not put her in harm’s way intentionally. Needless to say, take precautions if you are going to be out very late.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you are planning to use public transportation a lot(especially cable cars)get the muni "passport". A one way trip on the cable car is $5. So the pass just about pays for itself after 2 round trips. Also, if you are looking for a cheap but healthy low calorie meal, try Burger King’s chicken salad. It comes sealed in a bowl making it very portable. I bought one for my trip home. Purchase round trip BART ticket to save time.

you get what you pay for

I booked a room at the Mark Twain because the price was extremely reasonable and the location was good. The hotel has undergone a facelift but if you’re looking for posh accommodations, look elsewhere. My room was quite small but clean. The major objections were a very loud fan in the bathroom that is connected to the light switch so it has to run all the time the light is on. Bathroom lighting is terrible. My room was warm and the A/C was not working. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable and the room itself was quiet; no street noise at night.

Not impressed, but reasonable for the price

Area around the hotel was somewhat sketchy especially when I arrived at the hotel around 10pm due to my flight schedule. The building itself seems to be maintained okay. Reasonable stay for the price. If you are traveling on a budget, I would recommend.

Traveler's tip on dining

If you don’t mind walking a bit sketchy area, there’s a decent curry place for a meal or snack.

Almost great

I liked everything about this hotel except that they did not offer free internet. Internet is not included in the price of your room unless you get a deluxe room.

Just by the Hotel there’s a great Thai restaurant.
