A Step above a hostel

I paid extra for a private bathroom, and while soap was provided, there was no shampoo or conditioner. There was also no TV. If you’re really just looking for a place to sleep at night, this place will probably be fine, but don’t expect even average amenities. The location is pretty nice, about a block away from the 96th st. 123 trains so you can get to wherever you need to fairly easily. If you’re going to get a private bathroom, I recommend spending a few more bucks a night at a better hotel.

Great Little Hotel

There’s pleasant staff, clean rooms and furnishings, with easy access to the subway being only a couple blocks away. It’s a great little place for the price and hot water!

Digusting

Wow, I remember reading from other reviews that this place was "just a place to lay your head," but it’s possible the Royal Park Hotel is even less than that. Staff was polite at check-in and it’s located within close walking distance to the Red line, but those are just about the only two good things about this dump. If you absolutely must have to stay here, do yourself a favor and DO NOT choose the shared bathroom option. There is only one bathroom per floor and it’s absolutely disgusting. I get grossed out just thinking about had I didn’t have a choice but to stand on that greasy tub floor. The drain wasn’t even clean, so it would just collect water at the bottom as you stood there. I don’t know how else to describe the experience but incredibly disappointing. Please don’t waste your time here. Sure, it’s only a place to sleep, but think about how much nicer it is to come home to a clean hotel room with a functioning bathroom.

IF YOU JUST NEED A ROOM

If you just need a room and DO NOT plan on spending any time in the hotel its a good place to stay, because of the price. Shared bath means there is one single bathroom for from what I could tell 5 to 10 rooms. Towels were not provided at the bathroom, you possibly could have asked for them at the front desk but I didnt nor did I see any signs that said so. The blankets were very small and light and it was very cold in the room. The people were very nice and checkout and checkin were very quick and easy.

Good price and easy transportation

This is a good option in this ranger price. It’s easy and fast to take a metro and go to Times Square, Dowtomn and other areas. (Line 2 and 3 is more faster) The cleanliness in the bathroom could be better. Near, the Candy Hostel it’s better option .

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PLACE TO STAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would of rather of slept on the side of the road then stayed at this hotel. It was awful, every single thing about it. We were moved to 3 different rooms in one night of staying. Also, you have to be careful what you book or you will end up in a room with no bathroom in it. There are no TV’s in any of the rooms, the front desk people were nice.. but that was the only good thing about this place. It was scummy as hell.. disgusting for that matter. There were no outlets.. the breaker in the bathroom kept tripping.. the place smelled horrible, it was gross. I don’t recommend it to ANYONE!

Fine for one night

Really nice employees, who are very helpfull. Quality of the rooms is not good for that price, they have really minimal facilities. Also be aware that not every room has a bathroom. It’s ok for one night, but if you are going to stay longer in New York, I would recommend something else.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

buy an unlimited metrocard for $8,- a day, the metrostation is around the corner and brings you to lower Manhattan in no time.

Good buy

The Royal Park hotel had a good location (near the subway, lots of eateries, Walgreens, etc). People at the desk were very nice and helpful. They put us in the "deluxe" suite the 1st night as they didn’t have any other rooms (although I booked 2 months ahead of time). When we changed, we didn’t get a room with a TV (we have 2 kids and that would have been nice). but the AC worked fine, it was a QUIET and CLEAN room (including the beds). We had a private bath, but a couple of the tiles were cracked or missing. Hotel says they are undergoing a renovation in 3 months, but the bathroom was clean, and the hot and cold water worked fine. There was no telephone in the room, but the hotel did give us a personal wake-up call on the morning of our departure. All in all, it was a good value for the money.

perfect if you only need a room

hardly any complaints. I was aware of what i was getting myself into, due to reading the past reviews. I was staying there for a short weekend trip and couldnt be more perfect. Walking distance to broadway, centeral park, great food and bars around. And the subway station was very close. The only thing i got annoyed about was i couldnt do a late check out w/o paying a fee..or holding my bags. i didnt mind payin for them to watch my bags, but to check out an hour later i thought wasnt needed to charge. advice- due to sharing bathrooms, they were very clean when i was there, but i still wore my flip flops and make sure u have travel toiletries since theres not a whole lot of space in bathrooms either. and bring cash, alot of places need a minimum for credit cards.

NEVER AGAIN

The pictures of this establishment look nothing like the actual hotel. Further, I booked a room with a queen sized bed, but was put in a room with 2 double beds. This was never corrected despite my request. Additionally, the room was supposed to have a t.v., it didn’t. In fact there weren’t even power outlets in the room so there was no way to charge our cell phones over night. Finally, you can hear everything that goes on in this hotel from your room. My room was at the other end of the hotel from the front desk, yet I hear the movie (Star Wars) that the front desk attendant was playing on the front desk computer.

Does not compare to other budget hotels in Manhattan

Misleading in the fact that there was no air-conditioning. The rooms that you see advertised are actually the "Model Rooms" where they keep the luggage of patrons. Speaking of luggage, keep in mind that if you arrive early and want to at least check in your luggage there is a $2 fee per bag. Oh...and there’s also a $2 if you want them to hold your bags AFTER check out. The "standard" room were below standard. They lacked basics such as a mirror, a lamp, a chair and even a hook for your towels or clothes. They did have clean sheets and a pretty good location.

Good for the price

The room did not look like the one from the picture, but was satisfactorily clean. It seemed like they were working on the reception, so the front desk was a little out of shape, but the service was adequate, although certainly not exceptional. Hard to beat the price in Manhattan though.

Great Location to stay in NYC

OK, the hotel is very basic, but what can you expect for this price? The room served its purpose, we came in late at night and left early in the morning. If you plan to be out the whole day anyway, this is a reasonable place to stay. Just adjust your expectations! The area feels pretty safe, subway close by, overall convenient location

Lowest standard of hotel...

Definitely NOT a place worth staying. It’s not a hotel, it’s a residence building which happens to have a couple of ’rooms’ they rent per night... so that means you could walk down the hall and smell what other people are cooking in their respective apartments. Bathrooms are dirty, and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll get there on a day that there’s actually hot water. We had no heating in our room and one night the radiator started leaking. A bad bad experience.

Bad Surprise

The photos of the Royal Park Hotel are not like the real ’experience’ I had with my sister. It seems this hotel has long term hosts, hence they cook in their room and it smells really bad in the corridor. Even if our rooms were cleaned every day, the hotel looks really old inside and the room we had was really really small and did not look like the picture online. To sum up, you’d rather go to a dormitory than pay ’that’ much for so poor quality.

Safe and Clean, Bare Bones Basics

If all you want is a clean, safe, well located place to sleep in Manhattan this hotel is ideal. I was actually happy to find a place that I did not have to pay for amenities I would not be using: TV, telephone, room service, turn-down service, hotel stationery, fancy decor. The room had 2 beds, an overhead fan/light, air conditioning, a closet, a mirror and a trash can. That’s it (bathroom in hall), but that is all I wanted: I was going to be out enjoying the city not staying in my room. If that is all you need this place is great. The staff was friendly, the location was good (1 block from subway, lots of restaurants and small stores nearby). I am happy an option like this is available in Manhattan. You should know up front that it is not a luxury hotel but if all you need are the minimum basics this is a great bet.

If you need to sleep

If all you need is a place to sleep while visiting NYC it is a fine place to stay. The room is literally 4 walls and a bed. We never had to wait for a restroom. The bathrooms were clean enough. Only one block from a subway stop, so that was very convenient.

Cheap, being remodeled, excellent location

We were looking for a cheap hotel on the upper west side. Needed two beds and a private bath but didn’t care about amenities. Location was perfect and it suited us just fine. The sheets and towels were clean, the new double beds were comfortable, and there were plenty of pillows. There was a new second sink in the room. There were no glasses or Kleenex, and the TV was lousy but we didn’t care. The new owner is fixing it up.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Key West Diner a block down on Broadway is excellent and I had prearranged for the Walgreen’s on the corner to refill a complicated prescription which they did perfectly.
