Enjoyable stay at Riviera Hotel Taipei

We stayed at Riviera Hotel with our 5 year old daughter for 4 nights and 5 days. It was our first trip to Taipei, and we were returning to the United States from a 3 week trip to Korea, so we had a lot of luggage, the suite was nice, but we ended up not really using the extra room. The hotel seemed to cater to business travelers from Europe, but it met our needs just fine. The front desk and bell staff were all extremely attentive and kind. The breakfast buffet was very good and had a good variety of foods, breads, fruits, cereals, with a chef to cook eggs to order. The staff at the restaurant were equally attentive and kind. Each morning, the staff always inquired about our plans as we left the hotel, and they did their best to help us get to where we wanted to go. The MRT station was not such a far walk, even with a 5 year old, and a bus stop was even closer. On the last day, with a couple of hours to spend before heading to the airport, the front desk staff directed us to a very nice park (the Tienmu Sports Park) for our daughter to play at -- because the Taipei Municipal Children’s Recreation Center (which is close to the hotel) was closed due to construction for the 2010 World Flora Expo. The hotel rooms were nice and the cleaning staff always did a good job while we were out. From our room, we had a nice view that included the impressive Grand Hotel.

Plan on spending the entire day at the Taipei zoo, but bring your own lunch -- the only place that serves meals at the zoo is McDonalds (and then they only serve chicken-based food and fries). Our daughter really enjoyed the butterfly house, which is combined with an insectorium, which the boys who were there seemed to really enjoy. There is a nice children’s recreation center near the zoo, that also seemed like a fun place for a child to spend a day. In central Taipei, the Da’an park has a nice playground for children - and they are close to expanding the playground equipment area with new, colorful equipment. Taipei 101 is not worth the trip as a family destination, but there is a great area right behind Taipei city hall that has a huge sandy "beach" type area for kids to play in the sand. The Shilin night market is full of sights, sounds, and food that kids will love. The Taipei Municipal Children’s recreation center was closed when we went due to construction for the 2010 World Fauna Expo, but looked from the outside like it had rides and would be a lot of fun for our 5 year old daughter. The huge ferris wheel at the Mirimar Entertainment Park is fun. Tienmu Sports Park is a nice place for the kids to play. We highly recommend the Children’s Art Museum of Taipei - to take a tour is an interactive art display. They were even kind enough for us to find a staff member who spoke English to take us around. It’s a little hard to find, but worth the effort. Our daughter also enjoyed the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. The big statue was fascinating to her, as were all of the exhibits downstairs, the changing of the guard, and the ponds outside. Also, as we come from a place without public transportation to speak of, she loved taking the MRT and the busses.

Great location and fantastic service - very attentive

This hotel provided great service with regards to everything from cleaning your room, writing directions for the taxi drivers in Chinese or helping us book tours. They knew who we were and were very attentive in every way. The location is fairly convenient to everything. Taxis are so inexpensive that despite only being 10 minutes walk from the MRT, it wasn’t always the best means of transportation around the city. We mostly took taxis to the tourist destinations. We were very pleased with every aspect of our stay at the Riviera and would definitely stay here again as well as recommend it to fellow travelers with or without children.

This was a awsome hotel

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. They went out of their way to help us determine if we had tickets to the opening ceremony of the Deaflympics. Travel around the city was made very easy as they wrote the address in Chineese and then we gave it to the taxi driver. I would not hesitate to go back to this hotel if I ever go back to Taiwan
