Nice, quiet budget hotel

The Holy Land Hotel is a clean, quiet place about a block away from Herod’s Gate in East Jerusalem. The room was clean and well kept, and all fixtures were in working order (air conditioning, TV, etc). The rate was quite low compared with others in Jerusalem near the old city. However you MUST know that this hotel is in the heart of an Arab district. While I like hearing the call to prayer several times per day, I’ve had two Jewish taxi drivers who would only drop me a few blocks away, rather than drive into enemy territory. If you stay here, be sure to get the phone number of a taxi driver who is comfortable here, and call that person when you need a taxi back to the hotel. I had a Hassidic Jewish driver pick me up from Hebrew University today, and I was not imagining the hostility and aggression towards him as he brought me as close as he dared. Also, as a single, blond, female traveler, I don’t feel safe walking in the area alone, and I certainly wouldn’t go out alone at night. Please be careful if you stay here as a single female.
