General Information
What to expect: The lobby’s brass-and-nickel fixtures, vaulted ceilings, and piped-in classical music create an Art Deco ambience on the third-floor A Deck; the 1,019-foot ship features original 1930s art, dinnerware, and furniture, as well as other reminders of its maiden voyage in 1936. The eclectic mix of guests includes European tourists, vacationers, bridal parties, and conventioneers.
Amenity highlights: The Queen Mary Hotel has three restaurants and an on-board spa. Daily guided ship tours (surcharge) cover the history–and hauntings–of the luxury liner, and visit its galleries of original 1930s art. Tickets for tours (with or without special effects) are available on the ship; self-guided walking tours are complimentary for hotel guests. A recommended end to any tour: cocktails with an ocean view in the ship’s stately Observation Bar.
Insider tip: From terminals next to the ship, visitors can travel to Santa Catalina Island via ferry (one hour) or helicopter (15 minutes). A haven for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing, the island is also a popular day-trip destination. Its ocean promenade is lined with restaurants and shops, and its rugged interior offers horseback riding and hiking.
