Mini but good
L Hotel is a spanking new chain hotel with small, well-designed rooms and friendly, efficient staff. Although it is on the "wrong side of the tracks" and in fact right next to them, it is also only a 10 minute walk from the Zwinger. Positives: Comfortable beds. Very clean. Double glazed windows. Thoughtfully designed rooms in an attractive, minimal style. Helpful staff. Lots of parking. Good breakfast, though expensive at 15 euros. A rental car agency is around the corner. Negatives: No closet, and only space for about 5 hangers on a small rod in the bedroom. Rooms are small (so well-designed that we didnt mind, but others might). Located on a busy road, so there is noise when the windows are open. Exterior of the hotel is grimly unattractive. Not many restaurants in the immediate environs (though close to the old cigar factory, which has a restaurant we didnt try). You are in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but you have views of train tracks. Bottom line: A good value, and we felt the compromises were reasonable for a price that met our budget. I would stay here again.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Tickets for the Historical Gruene Gewoelbe go on sale at 10 am and people start to queue at 9 am. Its worth it. There are a lot of Treasury collections in Europe, but not many opportunities to see them as they would have been displayed in the 18th C. If you cant get tickets, the more outstanding objects are in the New Gruene Gewoelbe, displayed in a modern museum setting.
