Father and Son trip to Switzerland
The hotel is close to the train station (5 -7 min walk) and in a great location - very central to all the restaurants and shops. We had a river view room which is really a must as the view of the river, town and mountains is spectacular. The room was quite large by European standards and well maintained. Good bathroom. Everything was very clean. Doing your laundry at the hotel costs a small fortune but theres a laundry only 5-10 mins walk away. Meals at the hotel are quite expensive but there are lots of bakeries and fruit stalls nearby if you want something simple and cheap. The main benefit of this hotel is its location. You couldnt get any closer to the main eating and shopping area. The hotels dining area is literally right on the river and you can watch the swans and ducks swim by as you dine. Its one of the more expensive hotels in the town but its location and good sized rooms and spectacular views make it good value. We would have appreciated a little more personal attention from staff, but thats about the only criticism I can think of. They were helpful, responsive and courteous at all times but didnt go out of their way to enquire if you needed any assistance planning your visit etc... Overall we really enjoyed our visit at the hotel and the area, but its relatively expensive. Like everything - you get what you pay for though.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The trips to the mountains are very worthwhile. We visited in August and there were lots of people on summer school holidays which made it very busy. Visit out of the peak period or start your day as early as possible. The tourist information centre at the railway was fantastic. You can use Lucerne as a base for doing day trips to other beuatiful Swiss towns not too far away as the train system is excellent. Make sure you go on the Lake boat trips.
