Cheap, clean.
Japanese rooms have little comfort, but if youre aware of that on booking, this is an excellent choice. We slept better on these matrasses on the floor then on most western-style beds in other cheap hotels. We did have to get used to the smell in the room though: it smelled a bit funny, because our room didnt have a window. But thats no reason not to book this hotel, I will certainly book the same hotel again when I go back to Kyoto. Very friendly and helpfull hostess, clean rooms, good location near the JR station.

Traditional Tatami mat hotel
This is a traditional tatami mat floor hotel with tiny rooms and futons on the floor. The people are extremely friendly, the place is immaculate and the water in the tiny bathroom is hot. You sleep on a futon on the floor which was something we tried and didnt care for. We went to a western hotel down the road which was more to our liking. Personal preference. For this type experience, the place was great. For big beds on a bed frame, look around.
Traveler's tip
Affordable lodging is available if you look. Kyoto is a magical place. During busy season(summer) make reservations on line for the Imperial palace, gardens etc. Great easy bus system and friendly helpful people.

Deserves only 1 star; would not recommend even with its moderate price
We stayed for 4 nights, and would not recommend this place; the moderate price is still to high for what youre getting. The double room was very small- just large enough to fit the double sized futon and a little breakfast tray table. The pictures of the living room and kitchen were misleading b/c they were very cluttered so you couldnt access the areas easily. Our towels smelled of smoke every day and the hot water availability was spotty. That being said, the room at least was kept clean and was within easy distance of the Kyoto Station. Id recommend staying at another of the similarly priced hostels/guesthouses in the area.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
The Kyoto Station travelers information booth on the 9th floor was indispensable for maps and orienting ourselves. Armed with their "Bus Navi" map of city bus routes, we saw the major sights and didnt pay for expensive cabs.
