Needs cleaning
I had checked into a room on the first floor, the halls wereupdated from the upper floors. When I got in the room, it was dated (the floor was tile through out, so it was cleaner than what I went too), when I went in the bathroom, there was a leak and mold on the ceiling. I opened the closet and there was mold in the closet too. I did not want to hang my clothes in there so I went down to the lobby to switch rooms. they gave me a room with twin beds (I had a room with a king size bed). The carpet was filthy, but I figured the dirty carpet was better than the mold, so I took the room. I then started looking at the room after I moved my stuff in, everything was dirty, carpet, sheets, sofa, chair were stained, and there was something on the bathroom floor (it was there for my entire stay). The staff at the desk was great, but the room was disgusting. This was the only hotel I stayed at where I did not tip the cleaning staff. all they did was make the bed.I left stuff in the room as a test, they never cleaned it up.

The people selling items on the beach are annoying, there are less at Ipanema Beach.

Great Staff!
The Pestana Rio Atlantica is a bit dated, however, the staff there is first rate. They go out of their way to accomodate you and be helpful.

OK - If you stay in the lobby !
This hotel is at least $100 a night more than the tourist class hotels that abound all over Copacabana and Ipanema. For that $100, you get a beautiful lobby and a nicer roof top pool, and, unfortunately, not much else. The rooms are clean but a bit run down. The bathroom and other facilities such as the gym are 50 years old and in sore need of an upgrade. It would appear that you are paying for the Pestansa name.
