Soon to be Demolished

Hotel used to be one of the better ones, but it is in serious decline. This hotel is only for budget travelers.

Not impressed. Do not recommend it to anyone.

On the second day or our stay at this hotel, my Rolex watch was stolen out of our room. I have made several phone calls to this hotel to try to resolve this issue and after a month, I still have not gotten a response back from this hotel. I do not recommend staying at this hotel to anyone.

Wish we could go back

Unfortunately, our favorite hotel in San Francisco has been bought out and construction will start in a few days and will now become a medical center. We are truly disappointed. This hotel had all of the amenities that anyone would want. The staff was wonderful, the hotel was charming and cozy and the food in the restaurant was very good. Plus all the nice little shops and just the convenience of being on Van Ness. We were glad that we got to stay one more time.

Can’t judge a book by its lobby...

Lobby very nice...rooms very out-dated (and carpet didn’t seem clean). We did not have hot water in our shower on most mornings. When it was hot, it was scalding hot and we could not adjust it to be a comfortable water temperature for showering. Good location. Convienent to have Enterprise in garage, and it was easy to take the city bus to popular tourist attractions.

Unsatisfactory hotel experience

The good looking lobby entrance and Jack Tar Grill were very deceptive to what the actual room experience was. Although the low price was the only thing I could afford at the time, I didn’t expect what I found in the room. I was booked for a queen bed; there was only a standard. There was a stuffed chair and ottoman that were badly stained. The carpet was stained. The windows were dirty. The shower was terrible. The TV remote didn’t work right. There was no free parking for guests.

Too bad the hotel is being closed

The Hotel was nice and local transportation was near by and easy to obtain. Hotel staff was very helpful. Too bad the Hotel is being closed to allow for a hospital to be constructed.

After October 2009 Cathedral Hill Hotel will be taken down to make way for a Hospital

My wife and I stayed at the Cathedral Hill Hotel while it was in its second last month of life. After October 2009 it will be taken down so that a Hospital can be built in its location. The hotel’s location, the intersection of Van Ness Ave. and Geary Ave., was perfect for utilizing public transportation to enjoy San Francisco. The hotel could have been much cleaner, and with newer carpeting and an updated bathroom it would have been more comfortable, but money was not going to be invested into a hotel on its last leg of life.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

When visiting San Francisco, utilize the public transportation (MUNI bus, and the trolley) to avoid driving in traffic.

IF I HAD TO.......

For the price the hotel was ok. The rooms seem in need of a good scrubbing. The furniture needed to be updated. I would only recommend the hotel if you are looking for inexpensive. The rooms facing the street are noisy.

it was a good hotel for what we paid for

It was a nice hotel. The customer service was great. It was in an okay area but close to north beach and fisherman’s wharf if you take the bus.

Good Value

Older Hotel kept in good condition. Front desk was very helpful in having cabs ready and any other information we neede. There is an Enterprise car rental on site. This helped alot as we spent 3 days in San Francisco then rented the car to drive to Yosemite and the Redwood National Forest. Drove back to hotel, dropped the car off, and next morning flew home.

See above. You don’t need a car while staying in San Francisco so why rent one. Save money.

inconvenient layout - wouldn’t stay again!

at check-in, the lady said she would upgrade our room for free (probably because she saw the room was booked thru Expedia and wanted a good review). the room was on the 5th floor. after going through a maze to get on the right elevator (apparently the hotel shares the elevator and the parking garage with a connected commercial office building), we finally got to our room. the room was so old i felt like Burt Reynolds was going to turn the corner to greet us. there were two huge windows facing the streets and it actually was a very nice view. trying to find our way back out, the elevator was busted so we had to go through the service hallways to use their elevators. overall, the design of the hotel makes it very inconvenient to get around. the kind of place where you either don’t want to leave your room, or don’t want to go back to your room, because you’re afraid you’ll get lost. best part was parking was only $20. at other places it’s usually $25. still next time i’m in SF, i will pay $25 and stay somewhere else.

Traveler's tip

if you end up staying here you should make sure you are using the correct elevator before you end up in the connected commercial office building, because if you’re not you’ll have to turn back. which may be annoying if you’re carrying a lot of bags. also, you might want to get clear instructions as to where the parking garage is, because it’s actually underground. i had to circle the block a couple times before i found it.

Never again

This hotel was nothing what we thought. It was old, dirty,& run down. The rooms were nothing like what was shown on-line. The 2nd night there all the rooms locked down & no one could get into their rooms. We had to wait over an hour to get back in. For the price...I’d rather keep looking!! It’s time to take down this hotel!!!

crapithral hill hotel sanfrancisco

hote really sucks, looks like an old hospital from outside. every step i took trying to find something that made it redeemed itself never happened, it only got worse. yukks. i almost lost my future wife by booking this lousy hotel. i rather sleep in the street before i spend another night in there. Only good thing was that it was so lousy that it motivated us to get the hell out of there.

Traveler's tip

dont go there. anywhere is but there.

Average at best.

They are tearing down this hotel soon to build a hospital. It is average at best. The pictures are deceptive on the website. It is an ok place to stay. The staff was very helpful.

Traveler's tip

The summer is colder than most people think. If you can help it, travel there in the winter. It will be warmer. The location is in the middle of the city. Be prepared to walk if you use public transportation.

Worst Place Yet...

First contact at the hotel was an italian guy who was rude and obviously hated his job by the crappy attitude.Hotel room description:Is advertised as a non smoking hotel, yet it smells like old cigarettes? Lobby large, and vacant. Hotel Room: Smelled, Holes on the wall were covered with a loose take and cut out wall paper, window stuck and would not close due to bad hinges, dirty carpets, old linens which were very dirty. (Plus!Sheets were clean.) Everything is a extra here even local calls. The dirty wading pool on the 4th floor a joke to the pictures they show, old rickety picnic tables are your seats in that location. Nothing is really close to this hotel as it is seedie and all car dealerships. Taxi’s must be called since none are around, lots of bums etc. No ventilation in very small bathrooms which had a hard with with HOT water? Elevators were broke and NO ONE CARED TO HELP or fix them? The dirty stairs we had to get up to our rooms on the 5th floor smelled like garbage. This is one place I would say all pictures are complete LIES of the hotel, and if you book it, you’ll be sadly disappointed as I suspect my family and parents were. Pay more this ONE star isn’t worth a look, rent a car and stay in it!

Do NOT BRING YOUR FAMILY HERE LIKE I DID! You will be embarrassed and you will not be able to get a refund when you are dissatisfied since it’s them who decides who gets a refund NOT EXPEDIA. When we checked in they blamed Expedia for the wrong information...not them?? Hmmmm, have to say, who’s playing who now folks? Not a place to bring your children.

San Francisco - A Good Place To Stay

Except for some loose wall paper and the TV not working it was just what I was hoping for I did not go to San Francisco to watch TV

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Purchase a three day transit pass from the Gift Shop and use the buses that run up and down Van Ness. The California Street Cable car is 5 block north, use a bus to get there, transfer to Powell Street Cable car to Market, Fishermans Warf or Harbor. Do not forget to take in the Buena Vista Bar and Irish Coffee at the end of the harbor turn around. Leave the car in the garage, you do not need it.

Decent hotel - small complaints

It was overall a decent hotel, but when we got there our king-sized bed was only a double. We called down from the room, was told to come down (with all of our luggage) to the front desk only to be given a key to a new room and then we had to go back up again... ha ha... someone could have brought a key up to us! The elevators: Good luck figuring out what floor their stopping on when you’re in them. The numbers don’t all light up and the floors outside aren’t numbered, that I could see... very confusing.

Traveler's tip

Buy a pass from the giftshop for using the public transportation (3 days - $18) I could catch a bus right out front of the hotel to go North & South on Van Ness, hop off on Market St. and catch underground MUNI to go East to Embarcadero or West to Castro and beyond... very convenient, leave your car at home - and use it on the cable cars too! Awesome public transport!

Cathedral Hill Hotel, Redding, CA should be burned down and replaced

We reserved 3 rooms. All of the rooms smelled. The doors were either unsecure or had gaps around the frames. The breakfast was not much more than a bananna and a waffle with watery coffee. I wish I could get my money back.
