San Francisco Best Western Americania
The best feature of the hotel is the ratio between its location and its cost. Very close to Market street, the financial district, civic center (the BART station is two blocks from the hotel), powell, etc., it was economically affordable and clean. In the night the neighborhood becomes a little bit deserted, but it was a very pleasant stay.

Worth a try
When we checked in at 10:45 p.m. on a October Sunday, the TV was not working and the proper amount of towels was not provided. The one maintenance man on duty until 11 p.m. could not fix the TV, so it had to wait until the next day. That meant me, a sports enthusiast, could not learn the days baseball playoff results or NFL results. While we were out the next day, the TV was fixed. And the proper amount of towels were left. The hotel manager, however, said she could not compensate us with a reduction of the room rate because we had paid for the room using Expedia. The location is 1.5 blocks from Market Street and we were warned not to walk in that area in the opposite direction. Location is, however, 4-5 blocks from the cable car terminus and that was nice. Restaurant on site is basically hamburgers and overpriced. Not many other restaurants around the location.
We chose this hotel because it was near Market Street, but, as stated above, the area is not the best by a long shot. We walked to most places and took public transportation as well; the latter was easy to obtain along Market Street.

Americania -- one of our favorite places!
We liked this hotel so much last time that we returned for our 2009 vacation stay. The entire facility has been completely refurbished now. The staff made it a point to remember us from last time. Everything was A-plus. Keep in mind that just up the street is Market Street and not a very pretty section of town, but this is a very big city and you will see a wide diversity of people and situations -- none of which is threatening.
Traveler's tip on dining
There is one of our favorite italian restaurants just over on 337-3rd Street -- Pazzia. Its a smallish place and so you want to avoid weekends. Sumptuous food.
