A Relaxing Getaway
My mother and I stayed at the Gran Real when we visited Merida in February 2009. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay and I would return. For the price, the location is excellent - just a few blocks to the main square, markets, and sidewalk cafes. Even though the hotel was in the Centro Historico, lying by the pool in the atrium made us feel like we were far away from it all. Quiet and peaceful. The guys at the front desk were accommodating and helpful, answering all our tourist questions. We arrived at 9am, and our room was immediately ready even though check-in isn’t until 3. Our room was incredibly clean and the hotel is environmentally conscious by providing a card to place on your bedding if you do not need it washed everyday. The only complaint I have with the room is that the noise easily traveled from one room to the next. I could hear my neighbor’s quiet conversations on both sides. Of course, if you want the authenticity and experience of a very beautiful old building, this is something you will have to deal with. We ate at the restaurant one evening and were content with the seafood dish we ordered although the service was quite slow. The slow service was made up with the fact that they provided room service for no extra charge when we asked if it was possible to bring coffee and other beverages to our room. Very nice! If I have an opportunity to return to Merida, I will definitely return to the Gran Real Yucatan.

Not everything that shines is gold!!!!!!
We are very dissapointed of the room facilities. There was no shower cap, body cream, only two soaps and just one plastic bag with 1 cotton ball and two q-tips. The TV is too small for the room and had terrible signal reception. There is no iron equipment int the room and we had to wait 15 minutes for one to become available. There was no menu for room service or any information about it was handled at check in. The hotel location is good but the parking lot is around the corner with no guards. If you get back to the hotel late at night, you will have to open the entrance yourself. Also, be careful if you are looking to wake up late in the morning because even though you put the (DO NOT DISTURB) sign out of your door, they will not pay attention to that and wake you up anyways just to say (we are checking rooms!!) come on... give us a breake!! Is this what we should expect from a 5 stars hotel? No way..
