Insider tip: Five blocks south of Affinia Gardens, an aerial tramway over the East River connects Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, and provides spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline along the way. Passengers can take the four-minute ride and immediately return. Or they can explore parks, historical buildings, and skyline-view waterfront promenades that make the island popular with movie and television directors.

On Tuesday evenings, complimentary wine and cheese are available in a lounge with leather seating. Complimentary coffee is available mornings in the lounge, and there's a 24-hour, complimentary, self-serve herbal-tea bar in the lounge, as well.

Affinia Gardens offers 130 residential-style guest suites with large windows and fully equipped kitchens. Bedding includes pillowtop mattresses, down comforters, roll pillows, and down pillows, plus three-choice pillow menus. Adjustable halogen reading lights are above beds.
Kitchens include granite counters, four-burner ranges, microwaves, and full-sized refrigerators.
Three methods of connecting to the Internet (surcharges for all) are available: wired, wireless, and with 32-inch televisions via wireless keyboards. Televisions also offer pay movies, video games (surcharges), and video check-out. DVD players and VCRs are available on request.
Large desks come with task lights and cordless two-line telephones. (Two-line telephones are at bedsides, also.)
Bathrooms contain shower/tubs with curved shower rods for extra room. Decor includes oak furniture (including headboards) stained black, Roman window shades, and vanity counters with mirrors and red-leather stools.

Central Park, four blocks from Affinia Gardens, offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including ball fields, tennis courts, rowboat rentals, horseback riding, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, running, and in-line skating. Roosevelt Island, accessible by a tramway five blocks from Affinia Gardens, also includes ball fields and tennis courts and has a public Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool (surcharge).
Rockefeller Center's skating rink, 1.25 miles away, opens in winter, as does Central Park's Wollman Rink. Midtown athletic clubs offer swimming, racquet sports, and exercise classes.
