The hotel was beautiful--with potentially a beautiful view. Breakfast great.

The hotel was great. We arranged for the last night to be a triple bedded room, because our daughter was going to be with us. We had a terrible time with the front desk, because they felt we had made arrangments for a double room. That was the case with the subsequent hotel as well. It makes me think that expedia goofed in making the reservations. Not sure...but I think it was the case.

location, location, location!

Across from the Temple of Olympian Zeus and around the corner from the new Acropolis Museum and metro stop, it is hard to beat this hotel for location. Staff spoke English well and were always helpful. Breakfast buffet OK but not great but the morning view over the ruins in front or towards the acropolis in back can’t be beat. Room was adequate and quite clean. Not spacious but typical of european hotels. Bed could have been more comfortable. Would stay there again and would recommend. We had to upgrade to a more expensive room to get reservations because the less expensive rooms were booked, but not sure anything more than the nice balcony made it a superior room. Would not have been worth the cost except for the location.

The set lunch (Greek salad and a choice of typical Greek entrees, and maybe a drink for a set price) offered by some tourist restaurants in the Plaka can save some money but most still charge an additional cover, usually 3 euro,. Ask in advance to avoid surprises. Some may waive it if you don’t want bread and water but that is rare.

Was a great hotel, excellent location

This hotel was excellently located to the major historical sites and the metro. The staff was extremely helpful. The views from the top of the hotel gave a great view of the acropolis and temple of zeus as well as the city. The breakfast was excellent.

Our Hotel

The location of the hotel from where you can see clearly the Acropolis makes this an ideal place to stay. The staff at the hotel responds to your needs and the breakfast is served on time and is plentiful. Of course, like most things in Athens, the hotel is not cheap. Although located on a mjor street, the noise from vehicular traffic never bothers you in your rooms. Anytime we return to Athens we will try to stay at the this hotel!! Tell Kiki, Hello, for us!! She’s the desk clerk and a excellent and friendly, helpful employee.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Walking distance to many sites: Hadrian Gate, Syntagma Square and Metro. Acropolis Metro. The archeological museum. Restaurants and other businesses.

Location is excellent

Close to great food in the ’plaka’ and close to many of the ruins. The rooftop dining is super as you can see the Acropolis and other ruins as well as a skyline view of the city.

Great location

Athens Gate is the perfect hotel if you plan on seeing the ancient ruins while in Athens. The Acropolis, Agora, New Acropolis Museum and Temple of Zeus are all within walking distance, as well as several fine tavernas, shops and the Metro. Great complimentary breakfast every morning to start the day. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly, and it had all the amenities you would need, in addition to an outstanding location. We were very happy with our choice to stay at Athens Gate.

Small but nice

Our room was very clean and well-kept. We also loved our view of the Temple of Zeus - it was right out our window!

Traveler's tip

Use the metro instead of cabs, it is a VERY simple and easy-to-use system.

Great Hotel

This was by far the best hotel in Athens. We were 1 block away from the acropolis street (about a 10 min walk to the base of the acropolis), and they had a pretty good restaurant as soon as you turn the corner. Hotel was clean, staff/service was great, hotel restaurant was pricey (your paying for the view), and the breakfast was good. Streets around the hotel were safe even after dark.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The 400 bus line is the site seeing bus line (this is not the hop-on hop-off bus, but close) and is covered in the 3 day public transportation ticket. There is a great gelato place down the acropolis street and the restaurant across from it is also pretty good. DO NOT EAT AT ALDO’s, we had a horrible meal and the service was terrible.

AMAZING local hotel

We stayed at the Athens Gate in advance of a Greek Island sail. The location can’t be beat, and the hotel is a destination in of itself! Incredible views, fabulous bar/restaurant and the staff is wonderful! Please say hello to Sylvia in the roof garden. We loved it so much that we cancelled reservations at the Marina on our last night, and skipped up the hill to the Athens Gate. Rooms are great - large by European standards. We will stay at Athens Gate on any return trip.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Get to know the staff. They can help you with ANYTHING you need to know about getting around.

Athens Gate Hotel

It was a very nice hotel with a superior restaurant with a million dollar view of classical greece. The street noise was acceptable and the staff was execellent. All rooms are small compared to US standards as is true in all of Europe.

Location, Location, Location

The hotel has been renovated and was very modern and comfy. The staff helped us to get settled and gave great suggestions for restaurants. It is literally minutes from the Acropolis and Plaka. The view from the rooftop restaurant is "postcard" perfect. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Great location, clean & comfy, friendly staff, price is right!

we stayed a total 3 nts @ Athens Gate. Exceptional service from the multilingual staff (Tzela,Kiki,George the Hotel Mgr).RM 501: king bed,tub/shower,fridge/minibar,safe,balcony overlooking Temple of Zeus, flatscreen TV,clean soft sheets,A/C,chic modern decor. Also stayed in RMs 507 & 103,both had views to Temple of Zeus, but no tubs, just showers-no big deal.501 was our favorite.Noise from Syngrou Ave below didn’t bother us,just typical city sounds, slept peacefully all 3 nts.Complimentary breakfast in rooftop restaurant/bar was great: fruit, eggs, pastries & breads, juices, tea & coffee, meat, cheese, yogurt & lovely view of the Acropolis(view was spectacular at night).Internet,(must buy card from front desk),luggage storage & bar in lobby.5 min walk to the new Acropolis Museum/Plaka,10 min walk to Parliament Bldg/Syntagma Square.ATMs,mini-markets,souvenir shops,people-watching,banks & restaurants/bars in all price ranges 5-10 min walk.Cab ride from airport was 35 min. Picked up ferry tkts for islands at Hellenic Seaways (other companies there too) agency, less than 3 min walk. Overall very pleased and confidently recommend it to budget-minded travelers who want a clean, comfy, conveniently-located hotel with a stunning rooftop view. Walked by many hotels that had been on our list of possible choices, some cheaper, some much more expensive, more popular or more luxurious which only reinforced that we’d made the right choice in selecting the Athens Gate.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

You may choose to visit the Acropolis/Parthenon in morning/early afternoon. Be aware that the cruise shippers & most tourists do the same thing! We waited til 6PM to go. Smart move. It was 10 degrees cooler, gorgeous, peaceful (maybe 50 people on the mountain!)& the sunset was breath-taking. We had PLENTY of time before closing & our pics/video rocked...more RUINS & fewer people in the way! Also waited until late afternoon to visit Agora/Temple of Hephaestus. Had the place all to ourselves.

Great experience

We had a great experience with this hotel. The views from our rooms were astounding. On one side of the hotel, you see the acropolis. On the other side of the hotel you see the Temple of Zeus. Both views are incredible, and make this centrally hotel a no brainer. The staff is very attentive and management is phenomenal. The front desk crew bent over backwards to accommodate our requests. The manager brought me into his office and let me use his computer to resolve an issue. He then drew me a detailed itinerary of things to see on the Peloponnese. I strongly recommend this hotel.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Watch out for taxis. A "radio" taxi charges a minimum of 6 euros, no matter how short the trip. And, he starts charging from where he gets the call, not from where he picks you up. This came as a big surprise. In that respect, it’s better to hail a cab. Beware of taxi drivers adding surcharges over and above the meter. You should pay what’s on the meter, plus one euro per bag (from what I understand).

Great Hotel Great location

Room was comfortable, clean. Beautiful view of temple Zeus. Breakfast was lovely and the people serving were particularly nice. I wish we would have booked more days at Athen’s Gate! The Metro was a walk away. I was with my teenage girls and I felt very safe. Surprisingly enough our LDS (Mormon) church was a couple of doors away. For us a thrill and easy to go on Sunday. I would recommend this hotel. Safe, clean, efficient and updated. Close to shopping, museums and dining.

Super convenient, clean and staff super friendly

I really liked this hotel, the room sizes are good for 1-2 persons and it’s modern and clean, clean...The staff was very friendly and helpful. If going to Athens and want to be near the historical places, I recommend to stay here.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Close to Poseidon’s temple and short distance walking to the main local attractions and if going out at night to Plaka, it’s also just walking distance.

Excellent Location with newly renovated rooms

Fabulous view of the Acropolis from the restaurant as well as from some of the higher priced rooms. The hotel is in walking distance to many points of interest as well as to the Plaka and Monistariki districts. The hotel was newly remodeled in 2007 and the room was lovely with all of the modern conviences. There was no view from my room (so if that is important to you then make sure you ask about the rooms with the views) but the view from the restaurant is amazing.

Great Hotel

The hotel staff is very helpfull and courtious. If you need directions to any of the locations you need only ask the staff and they will tell you what you need. The hotel is clean including the bedroom, loby and restaurant. Good breakfast included with you stay. Close to Plaka and main attractions, its walking distance. Paid 40 euros from the airport to the hotel and 32 back the other way, ???

Traveler's tip on local attractions

There is plenty of areas to have lunch and dinner at Plaka. Take the metro and go to the National Museum its only 1 euro for the metro and 7 euro for the museum.
