What to expect: Built in 1942 by dictator Raphael Trujillo for the Dominican elite in Santo Domingo, this was the first luxury hotel in the Dominican Republic. The Renaissance Jaragua Hotel & Casino is still the place for Dominicans to stage weddings and other social events, even as it now caters to international business travelers, vacationers, and after-dark revelers.
Amenity highlights: Set above a lawn sloping toward the Caribbean, a sundeck by the large pool provides sweeping sea views. The casino (one of the largest in the Caribbean) draws from all over the city. The casino's dance bar caters to adults, with a separate disco serving youths. A 20-minute walk away, the Colonial Zone--the Old World's first city in the New World--offers memorable sightseeing and dining.
Insider tip: As an addition to the wake-up service, guests can choose a soft knock on the door and delivery of eye-opening coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and a newspaper.
