What to expect: Located within Banff National Park, The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is an excellent choice for travelers seeking upscale seclusion amid scenic splendor. Guests enter the blue-turreted, Edwardian-era building to a vast lobby with chandeliers and tapestries. Three-story windows showcase one of the world's finest hotel views: the blue-green lake and towering Rocky Mountain summits.
Amenity highlights: The resort runs a daily complimentary ski shuttle to Lake Louise Mountain Resort, 10 km (6 mi) away. One of Canada's most scenic ice rinks is right outside, on Lake Louise. Other outdoor adventures include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, canoeing on Lake Louise in summer, and hiking amid seasonal fall color. Indoor amenities include the full-service Escape Spa, a pool with spa tub, and a variety of dining options, from casual to gourmet.
Insider tip: A fun summer activity is a hike along the nearby Plain of the Six Glaciers trail. The trail follows the shore of Lake Louise up to a teahouse, with views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks along the way. Mountain goats are sometimes visible from the trail. In winter, try a hotel-guided Lake Louise by Moonlight snowshoe tour (surcharge), which affords views of the constellations on clear nights.
