Compassion in the Gold Coast!

When we arrived in Chicago, we were ushered into an illegitimate taxi. The driver charged us twice the fare from the airport to the hotel than he should have and would not give us our luggage until we paid him. We were distraught as we checked in, and the two lovely ladies at the front desk were infuriated at what had happened to us. So, without being asked or prompted in any way, they upgraded us to a suite for no extra charge! Then, when we got to our room, they had put together a care package of drinks and snacks and card saying how they hoped our Chicago experience got better. Surely that was above and beyond anything a clerk would be expected to do, and we were so touched. Also, the doorman was amazing. He ended up having to lug our luggage to two different floors, but he just kept talking and laughing and didn’t seem to mind at all. He also arranged us a taxi back to the airport that offered us a discount. The hotel itself is fun and funky. They have incorporated conch shells into everything! I would say that if you look too closely you can see that things are just aestheticly pleasing, not necessarily expensive and luxurious. But what more do you need for a week or two? We got an excellent price, especially taking into account our free upgrade, and you cannot beat staying in the Gold Coast.

You must do the observatory at the Hancock Center first thing. It gives you the opportunity to get a complete visual layout of the city and of all the things you are going to do throughout the week. It is kind of the same effect as a restaurant menu having a picture of the dish you have ordered and going to try for the first time. Also, if you are not familiar with Chicago’s history, the audio tour is a great place to get an overview. Also, we were given many different reviews of the Sears Tour (now Willis Tour). I would recommend doing both. The view is not as great or helpful as the Hancock, but the sky deck is so much fun!

Great Location

I was completely satisfied with the hotel. It was located in a safe location near shopping, restaurants and nightlife. It was an older hotel but had been completely redone in bright cheerful colors. I would definitely go back!

It was much better than I expected

I had to go to Chicago for the Marathon, and was running out of time to make an hotel reservation, I searched on expedia and got a very good deal on Hotel+Car, considering this, I thougt the Hotel was not going to be such a nice one, it was a great surprise for me and my wife when we got to the hotel it was perfect and the room was so nice and different than the common business hotel, the experience was very nice and the attention from the people was great too, when in Chicago we will definetivelly stay at it again. The only negative issue is that it does not have a car parking so you have to pay almost $40 buck a day for the parking next door... not nice.

Dont rent a car when you travel to Chicago, use the CTA ( metro or bus).

Good location, but mediocre service

Loved the location, within walking distance of many restaurants and museums, and the fact it was a small, boutique hotel, with bright, fun decoration. Front desk personnel were okay, but when the card key failed to work on the second day of a 4 day stay, I asked to have it reprogrammed--and the manager on duty acted as if he was doing me a BIG favor....also missed some sleep due to an air conditioner that cycled on and off noisily, and when running sounded like it was right there in the room with me.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

My wife is from northern Thailand, so of course we had to visit "Sticky Rice", a northern Thai restaurant in Chicago. She loved it, so it must be authentic!

Indigo Review

The hotel was just fine, It has a good location, near Rush and State Restaurant and bar area, and the overall hotel condition is good. Service is also good. I only have two minor complains, First One. I arrived late on the first night and I did no notice the give a room a window facing a very dark internal installation area, they change me to other room the next morning. Second They Charged me like 12 USD or so to my credit card after I leave the hotel without any notice, I don’t know why.

Perfect location

This hotel is in the perfect location in a mostly residential area. Many restaurants are close by. The staff is friendly and the room where we stayed always nice and clean. When we asked for more coffee for the in-room coffee maker, there was never a problem. Only 2 small complaints. The room only had 1 chair, another would have been nice. The overpowering (in my opinion) scent of vanilla in the lobby made it difficult to want to spend time in the bar which is right off the lobby.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

This is a great place to stay as it is within walking distance of many restaurants and attractions such as Lake Michigan, the Navy Pier and the Museum complex and just a block from the subway.

nice, low-key place

This hotel is just north of downtown Chitown, but right off a convenient red-line train stop. It’s in a quaint neighborhood, so if you want away from the hussle and bustle, this will fit right in. From the outside, the building looks old and in disrepair; but don’t let it fool you -the rooms are nice, clean and comfy. If you want to be right in the action of downtown, I would not recommend. But if you desire a leisurely stay and still want to be close to downtown, this is a great place!

Very impressed

We really liked this hotel. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone would wants luxury but doesn’t mind not staying on Michigan Ave (very short walk though). My only complaint was parking. Although not technically part of the hotel, the parking garage recommended by the front desk was horrible & overpriced.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

If you have the time and like hookah you have to check out Aria Hookah Lounge in Schaumburg, IL. The owner is amazing and kept us entertained the entire night!

Great location, comfortable

The Hotel Indigo began life as The Claridge, a venerable luxury brand. That heritage is still on display in the quiet, comfortable border between Gold Coast and Old Town. Two blocks to the Red Line, around the corner to Division Street’s pubs, Rush Street just blocks away, it’s peerless. I felt like a resident, not a traveler, and the saturated colors (lots of blue; what a shock), overstuffed furniture and refined service made my 5-night stay quite pleasant. A few little cavils -- the "Golden Bean" coffee offering is a limited-hours corner with little but pastry. However, right next door is the 3rd Coast Cafe and Wine Bar, which serves excellent breakfast. Other food offerings are easy to find in one of America’s great food towns. The hotel itself has a nice bar, the Phi, though the blaring television detracts from the soothing blue-lit surroundings. My room was plagued with a mildew smell -- no doubt a consequence of the windowless shower bath and ineffectual fan -- but the staff stepped up to switch out shower curtains (and handheld shower device), and clean the place head to toe after I mentioned the smell.. Otherwise, the functional fitness center (which had a personal trainer conducting classes when I was there) was fine, and the television service more extensive (LodgeNet) than other, more expensive hotels in which I’ve stayed. All in all, I enjoyed it (as did Finicky Mrs.) and would stay there again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Mario’s, the Italian restaurant across the street, was very good -- they offered half-orders (which kept me in line...) and a nice wine list. But don’t eat there more than once -- there are just too many other great restaurants in the Second City...

Nice, intimate hotel with great staff

I had a great stay at the Hotel Indigo, with even a few little mishaps (heat went out on two floors, they had to move me) and for some reason the housekeeper wasn’t putting full supplies in my room (I love hotel toiletries and they use Aveda, btw) It is perfect for anyone wanting a nice, intimate place, clean, comfortable, with a quirky and fun atmosphere. The rate was great, as well. I would highly recommend them, even for the staff’s fantastic service (minus one strange housekeeper) :-)

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Great location for all the bars/restaurants in the Rush/Division area.

Great location and great room

We had a 2 queens on the top floor. This was in a great neighborhood near entertainment and restuarant. Hotel is only a block away from the Red Line subway stop, which is very convenient. Room was beautiful, and very special, not at all typical hotel decor. Hallways are a little narrow, like those of older hotels sometimes are, but everything was fresh and up to date. Very good price for what we got too. Also we were able to find on-street parking within 2 blocks of the hotel, avoid the $37 per night hotel parking.

Loved the Carribean Feel to the Hotel!

In Chicago when it’s snowy and cold, what a great place to stay! The bright but warm carribean-like rooms are wonderful. It’s worth the few extra dollars to stay in a room with a fire place!

Clean, neat with great beds, location is great between shopping and night life you can cab anywhere with much less cost and hassel than having a car. Could walk to oak street/ mag mile and rush/ dearborn street in good weather. Neighborhood restaurants offer true Chicago experience from a prior native!

Beautiful and relaxing

All the rooms are different as this is a newly remodled historic hotel. The feel of the hotel is almost caribbean - very island in decor. Very different and nice in Chicago’s gold coast. Staff was great, very accomodating - even helping us to find the "best Chili in Chicago" I will definately stay with Hotel Indigo again.
