Great First Night in Costa Rica
The hotel is staffed with the most friendly helpful people you could ask for, and they speak excellent English. We recognize most of them each trip. Car rental companies are across the parking lot, very convenient. Dennys is too, its crazy expensive compared to the States, the same menu, Breakfast was ok, typical hotel lobby. There was ham mixed in with the eggs,as a vegetarian that fixed that for me. They had some really good beans, fruit etc. so we were fine. They used to have a deal where you got two free drinks at check in at a little bar. I liked that better, then we would go to Dennys for breakfast Bring your own coffee cups and a glass or two, they still rely really heavily on Styrofoam everything. One nice feature is a free calling card to the States (probably other countries) so you can call from your room. We have stayed there many times, its kind of corporate America, not a Tico experience, but to get acclimated, easy shuttle to and from the airport it cant be beat. We stay there the first and last night, after the jungle its just so civilized. Its very well run, clean the beds are really comfortable, there is cable TV, a pool if you can time it right. It is near the airport so you hear the planes, but compared to most major airports in the States there arent that many flights, so its not particularly bothersome.
If you are driving over the mountains make SURE you do it in the daylight. It can be foggy and difficult to see in the daytime but at night it can be a truly terrifying experience. The clouds come down to the top of the mountain and it makes visibility near zero. We have experienced the trip back to San Jose in the rain and fog at night and I will miss my flight before I do that again. Bear in mind it gets dark about 6PM year around. During the day the views are spectacular!
