Booked Palmer but put at Hotel Next Door
Beware! The General Palmer is actually two different hotel facilities but they dont tell you that. Main hotel is the nice historic one. However many of the rooms are actually in a hotel a half block away. That one has no elevator, requires a climb up long stairs, and you totally miss out on the historic hotel ambiance, look, and historic lobby which is usually the reason you would pick this hotel. But you still pay the same top-dollar price and the substitution isnt disclosed until you check-in and are stuck!

If you want a historic western hotel, stay somewhere other than the General Palmer.

Great Victorian Hotel
Excellent hotel that has a Victorian touch. This quaint hotel has captured the beauty of the West. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Great location in downtown Durango.

charming downtown historic inn!
Spent one night in July ’09, have visited Durango many times before, but never at General Palmer--great Victorian era hotel 1/2 block from narrow gauge railroad depot; we watched train departing from the rooftop terrace, and walked through downtown. Our queen room was darling, fluffy robes, makeup mirror,hairdryer, even breakfast was super. Can’t wait to return.

Dinner at French restaurant across the street was excellent, and although it was just days before July 4th, crowds in Durango were not unreasonable.
