Will not be returning

I booked this hotel for my husband’s birthday and when I arrived, the room had only been partially cleaned - the bathroom was gross and there was still garbage in one of the trash cans. When I went to the front desk she said they were booked and I could not have a different room. She also told me that I would have to wait 2 hours for the next cleaning crew to be through. The room itself was shabby and looks in need of restoration. It is to bad because the restaurant on premise is amazing.

The Rooms are a Letdown

The hotel is decent enuogh for the price, the lobby and restaruant are nicely remodeled, but the rooms were in serious need of remodeling from scratch. Old, dingy, and not up to par.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Easy walking distance to the Eastman House.

Strathallan used to be a nice hotel

This hotel was once a very fine establishment in Rochester. I was there for 2 nights, July 2009. It has not been updated in about 15-20 years, my bathtub was very dirty, the towels are very old and worn therefore very rough, the carpet was patched in several spots and frayed, the walls were patched and not re-painted, the television was very old and small and about 18 feet from the bed so kind of difficult to see. I expected a lot more from the Strathallan for the price. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone. The parking is kind of a free for all so you have to park before 5:30 to get a spot off the main road. Seems a lot of tenants in surrounding apartments take most of the spots.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

There are far more hotels, in the same price range and newer, that are a far better deal. The surrounding neighborhood can be a bit questionable, some shady charachters.

A whole lot for the money!

We decided on short notice to attend the International Jazz Festival in Rochester in June. Not having ever been to Rochester, I had no idea of where would be the best place to stay. I rely on the reviews and ratings on this site for guidance, and will pay more to stay at a better place. So through several hours of reading, I settled on the Strathallan. What a pleasant surprise! Our room was actually a small apartment, with a separate bedroom, good sized bathroom, living room and a small kitchen area. Everything was clean and comfortable, and the rate was very reasonable! Parking was free and there was a very nice restaurant and bar on the premises. Staff was all very friendly and helpful. We were only 5 blocks from the downtown Festival area, a very pleasant walk along the beautiful homes on East Avenue. We were told they are currently renovating from the top down, so it can only get better. We will be staying here again.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

There are a number of nice restaurants in the area along with the Eastman Theatre. A wonderful area to stroll if you enjoy beautiful architecture, especially the George Eastman home and museum.
