Oyster Paradise
The hotel staff was very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. The hotel is very basic. Internet access is at the front desk. You have to sit in the registration desk chair to access (the computer notifies you that it has worm viruses on it). The matresses on the beds were about three inches thick and hard (remember Indian hotel). The air conditioner had to be turned on by the front desk when it went out (and during the five nights we stayed, it went out twice). On the first day we arranged a day trip to Delhi with the front desk. We paid the driver at the end of the trip and gave him a 40% tip, even though at times he was lost in Delhi. When we went to check out, five days later, the hotel wanted us to pay for the trip again. I believe the driver thought we had given him the entire tour price (including tip)as a tip only. We offered to pay again, but the hotel management handled it. Again the hotel is very very basic, and if you are looking for a place to camp while touring Delhi and the surrounding area, it will suffice. The surrounding area is booming and under construction. The road leading into the hotel is a side road and looks like you are going down a limerock alleyway. Immediately behind the hotel is a beautiful modern building, shown on their website. The thing to remember is that India is a country of vast contrasts between poverty and richness. We were looking for a modest hotel to stay in, and thats what we found.
If you arrange for a cab with the hotel, make sure you clarify who gets paid and when. If you take a train trip, be sure to only show your ticket to someone on the train with ID or uniform. Again dont hand your ticket to anyone without proper ID. Snoots will claim you need to pay a tourist tax and tell you you must go to the tourist office before departure to pay it (of course the office is closed), but they can arrange for the payment and will initial your ticket, after payment to them.
