Great hotel

Great location near Times Square, good diner next door, also near Grand Central. Short walk to subway. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Hotel has a sophisticated vibe to it. Front desk staff friendly and efficient.

Bella Vita has great pizza and is a short walk away in Times Square.

Historic appeal

Typical NYC small rooms, but interesting historic character. Great for the price I booked. Excellent midtown location between Grand Central and Broadway.

Stately eloquence

The location of the hotel is ideal if going to the theater or shopping in midtown Manhattan. The staff is quietly accommodating. The ambience is classical New York when it was in its intellectual heyday. The rooms are small clean and adequate. The restaurant in the hotel is outstanding. It has everything in a small hotel has that the big chains lack. We were extremely pleased with our stay. We have gone there several times recently and it is the flagship for our NYC stay.

Watch the schedule of special NYC events (e.g., marathons, ethnic "day" celebrations) when accessing the airports on debarkation; they can cause significant traffic delays!

Staying at the Algonquin

It is great to come "home" from a long day ot sightseeing and have that wonderful lounge waiting with wine, coffee and food. We loved that and we loved being able to walk to the theatre district. Everyone was so nice to us and we felt like the people who worked there were family by the time we left. This was my second time at the Algonquin and I will be back again.

Very Disappointed

I decided to treat myself and stay at this smaller, boutique hotel. Although the location is excellent, the room was small - even by NYC standards. My laundry was never sent out and in fact was lost for a bit. My room was hot. It started pouring rain and they had no umbrellas. The hotel staff was somewhat friendly but certainly did not go out of their way to make it a pleasant stay. This was listed as a 4 star property but I would consider it a 3 star and not worth the money.

Love the history

This is not our first time at the Algonquin, so we must have enjoyed our previous stay. The hotel staff and general facilities are first rate. Some of the regular rooms are on the small side, but are quite adequate, unless you want to host a party ! There were some minor failings in provision of towels - and turning off the message light - but these were always promptly rectified when reported. We will stay again

Too much to list : the Frick collection, The Metropolitan Museum, The Lincoln Centre, The Top of the Rock, plus shopping, of course, and Central Park. As well as Mid and Up-Town, don’t neglect the neighbourhoods of lower Manhattan. You will need to go several times to even scratch the surface.

Great Hotel/Great Location

We’ve stayed at The Algonquin before but they have updated rooms and lobby in last year or so. Employees are always extremely friendly! Rooms are all remodeled, king size bed is soooo comfortable! Continental breakfast is just right. Can’t beat the location (right on 44th Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue). Close to everything. Lobby is fun place to people watch. Discount for parking in garage across the street.

Historic hotel in NYC

The Algonquin is a historic hotel with a great deal of charm. It’s a bit pricy, but great fun for a special occasion. It is a short walk from Grand Central Station, right in the middle of the theater district. The bathrooms are kind of small, but that’s typical of older properties. The room was fine, but the real joy of the place is just hanging out in the lobby or the bar (which you can also visit without staying at the hotel).

Charming historic hotel but needs more attention to cleaning

The Algonquin is a lovely old hotel. It’s small, it’s elegant, it’s in a great location. The restaurant is pricey (no surprise there) but the food and service did not disappoint. Our room was small (also no surprise) but very pleasant - comfy, upscale bedding, nicely decorated. The only criticism we have is of the bathroom facilities. The bathroom itself was the size of a large walk-in closet. That was tolerable. It was very poorly cleaned though, and had we been there longer or been spending more time in our room, we would have complained very strenuously about it. Impossible to know if this was an anomaly, or was characteristic of cleaning standards.

A delight!

This hotel is a gem.The moment we arrived, from the wonderful front desk staff (Edwin and Jeannie were superb) and the wonderful Dorothy Parker Suite, I was sold! If you’re seeing theater, you’ll find no better location. Yes, the elevators are a wee bit slow and there were problems with the card key to the room, but all in all I fell in love the entire experience. If you’re looking for charm...look no further! I’ll be back.

Historic, friendly place to stay.

The Algonquin is for those who appreciate historic hotels with character. The staff are very friendly, and we were provided complimentary breakfast (fresh fruit, pastries, juice, coffee and tea) during our stay. Very nice! The hotel is within walking distance of Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and Grand Central. The room and bath were small, but comfortable. The lobby is lovely and a great place to enjoy coffee and the newspaper. We would stay there again.

Service was somewhat indifferent

Some of the breakfast service plates stayed in the room for three days before being removed. Historical aspect of the hotel was interesting and fun, and the central location was all a plus

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Shopping and fine dining are within walking distance of the hotel - important when cabs can’t be found

Got shook down by the desk clerk

After we got into our room, the desk clerk called and said he could upgrade us to a suite. He said he wasn’t supposed to do this, but for a big enough tip he could work with us. A few minutes later he appeared at our door, and escorted us to the suite, swapped key cards with us, and waited with his hand outstreched for an appropriate number of bills. A real New York expience!

Great stay

This was my first stay at the Algonquin although I knew of it by reputation which, for me, it more than met. I would definitely stay there again. I noticed from previous visitors’ comments that some basic rooms are on the small side so I decided to treat myself to a suite as the cost was not hugely more - perhaps because I got a good last minute deal. The additional cost was well worth it. I had a large sitting room, good sized bedroom on the back of the hotel, ( always important in noisy NYC ), a nice bathroom and walk in closet. The bath looked as though it was original which sort of added to the charm although it took ages to fill. The bed was very comfortable. My only moan was that I was stung for room charges. As a frequent traveller I should have known better. I was charged $40 for a 15 minute call across the river to NJ ( it would have been cheaper to make an international call from my UK cell phone ! ) and another $40 for two miniatures. There was also a charge for what I think is an NYC tourist tax. My room service bill for my 3 night stay therefore came to over $100. Outrageous. The Algonquin’s other great strength is its location - you can walk to lots of sights and the subway is only a block away. Perfect for sightseeing.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Save your theatre trips for London ! Shows in NYC are ludicrously over priced. And if you want to see live opera, dance or concerts don’t visit in late August.

Great hotel

We’ve stayed at a few middle to high end hotels during our trips to NYC. The Algonquin meets or beats them all for comfort, service, ambience, etc. The location is great for the theater district, subways are close by, Madison Ave and 5th Ave shopping are a few blocks away. The staff were very nice and the room was clean. The hotel has a lot of history and a great literary vibe to it. Free wifi is available. The Algonquin cat is also very friendly.

A Great Hotel

This was my first trip to New York. I was told to expect a tiny room. This was small but larger than I expected. They provided a small refrigerator and the whole staff was great. I felt like I stayed with friends and not at a hotel. The cat was the icing on the cake. She is beautiful and provided a warm, family feel to the hotel. I can’t wait to visit again. Its in a great location and I definately will be back.

Old hotel with a lot of history

We haven’t stayed at the Algonquin in over 30 years, but it still has the character and charm we liked before. Service was excellent. The rooms were super quiet and clean.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

There are many superior restaurants close by, including a cute place just across the street for coffee and a quick breakfast. Theater is 5 minutes away.

greta hotel close to times square

We had stopped by the Algonquin Hotel bar, The Blue Bar last month and had such a great experience there, that we decided to travel to New York again in August for an overnight and chose the Algonquin. While staying at the hotel the service was great and the room was much larger than we expected.
