Berna

Berna is normally great value. Very polite and helpful staff. Stayed here twice in the space of several days. First room had tremendous smell of mold. Was there for 1 nite only, advised them, they were concerned and apologized. On returning for second stay, they provided a nicer room, an upgrade, but it too had mold. Asked the maid to clean the shower which had obvious mold around sides. Even after that, there were still visible areas of mold that were left. This isn’t normal for this hotel. Have stayed there before and had great experience, no issues whatsoever. This was summer, so the heat / humidity probably contributed.

Hotel Burna helped us solve an airline screw-up

The hotel was great, clean, a great value, close to Centrale Station etc but how great they are was shown when they helped my wife and I solve a problem with our seating on our airline flight back to Seattle. We went to do our on line check-in at an internet store (not at Hotel Burna) and found out airline had given away our seats and we had none for our 10-11 hour flight from Paris to Seattle. This was extremely upsetting since we had our seats nine (yes nine) months prior to our flight. We didn’t know where to turn so we went to the reception desk at Hotel Burna. The reception person said "let me help you take care of it". He could tell we were upset so he went on line at and was obviously having trouble getting a phone number where English was spoken. He spent fifteen minutes on line and the phone speaking in Italian and English then finally pointed to me to pick up the phone. There was an English speaking airline ticketing agent on the line. The problem was solved. Without his hard work and perseverance we would have been miserable our last day in Italy. We’ll stay at the Hotel Burna on our next trip to Milan.

Old world hotel in modern Milan

The Hotel Berna is an older style hotel a short walk from the central train station and the Metro. Our room was OK; bath was small. It had not been updated yet. There is a business center and bar. They serve a great breakfast each morning and have an aperitivo time each evening that has filling and delicious hors d’oeuvres. The staff was very helpful, especially Masimilliano! The neighborhood is residential but it’s an easy Metro ride to the city center.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

We took the Milan Half-Day Sightseeing Tour with Da Vinci’s Last Supper - it was well worth it! We took a train to Lake Como one morning and then took the ferry to Bellagio where we had lunch by the lake, and then took the hydrofoil back across the Lake. It was a lovely way to spend the day with great photo ops.

Mixed Feelings

Location, food (breakfast buffet), cleanliness of room all excellent. We paid extra for a superior room and while the room itself was ok size, the bathroom was the poorest set up I’ve been in. You could not shower without hitting your elbows several times, your knees were in the shower when you sat on the toilet, the sink was incredibly low (& btw we are not tall or big people). It was all very clean, but paying extra for this was a big disappointment. For one night, I could probably accept it, but we were there for 3 nights. I think we were in the worst superior room being on the 1st floor. In hindsight, I should have asked to be moved. Next time, I will ask for a room in the newer section as it seems the standard of room even in the same classification vary greatly.

Great Location - Great Value

We loved this hotel. The rooms were great and featured unrivaled (in Europe) air conditioning. The breakfast buffet was the best I’ve had anywhere. Front desk was helpful and Max at the bar was an absolute pleasure. Just a few blocks from the train station and within walking distance of the Galleria and Duomo, this is an ideal hotel.

convenient, clean and cool

We spent one night in Milan in transit. The Bernia was extremely convenient to the railros station and airport bus. Personnel were helpful and pleasant, the room was sizable by Italian standards with a good bed, bath, TV and closet space. Air conditioning worked and was controlled in the room (not always the case in Europe). Free internet access. We recommend highly.

Not bad for a few nights

Stayed 3 nights here, location is very close to the Central Station, really a 3 minute walk.. Kind of a sketchy part of town, as are most places near train stations, but I felt safe all the time. There were a couple restaurants nearby, kind of expensive, but decent food. Hotel was surprisingly nice, room spacious for Europe and kept very clean. Bed and pillows were as hard as a rock, but doable. Had trouble at front desk for wireless internet, really odd, otherwise they were kind of cocky, but whatever. Breakfast was fantastic, breakfast staff was VERY polite and nice, really great to start your day with nice coffees, pastry and eggs/bacon, very good. Also, they stock your mini-bar (non-alcoholic), really good value for that. I would stay here again.

Traveler's tip on dining

The place across the street charges 50% higher prices for dining after 10, even take away.

you will get surpriced

I was only there for one night, but this must be the first time I find a hotel with nicer rooms than the reception area!room was fresh and clean. I had to leave before brekky, but fresh croisants were available in reception area for free. minibar in the room was free and lots of toiletries to use, so i reckon they really take care of their guests...abit suspicious women standing outside on the street though..so not sure if area is the best, but close to central station and buses to airport.

Great Location

Great location - walking distance to Duomo and shopping areas. Breakfast buffet, nightly food and coffee make this a very affordable choice.Staff was very knowledgeable about the area and gave great advice regarding local sites and restaurants.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Fill up on the breakfast, eat a light lunch and then hit the nightly snack buffet to save money on food.

Clean, quiet, and close to Milano Centrale

My wife and I had a very enjoyable trip staying at the Hotel Berna. We stayed in the newer rooms across the street from the main entrance. It was easy to get back and forth for the excellent breakfast, and the free minibar of cold soda and mineral water was amazingly convenient after (or before) a long day of sightseeing. The one hour of free Internet access (two half-hour tickets) per day was great -- enough to download all of my mail and plan trips. 24hour access can also be purchased, but I didn’t need it for a vacation. The room was small by American standards but large by Italian standards, and the bathroom had a real shower. Everyone warned us to watch out for thieves near Centrale (typical for Italian rail stations), but we had no problems. It is about two blocks south from the front of Milano Centrale train station, which is much quieter than hotels near the tracks.

Traveler's tip

If arriving via Metro, take the exit to Via Pisani and Via Torrino; exit is just half a block from the hotel, but it is closed at night. Otherwise, if you exit Centrale and face away from the station entrance, it is a short walk across the plaza on a left diagonal, cross over the tram tracks, then cross the street to the left, and veer to the right to get to Via Torrini.

Comfortable, good service, near Train station

The staff at Berna is very helpful and friendly. The shower in the bathroom (no bath) was the worst feature since it was rather confining. Otherwise overall quite excellent. The breakfast buffet the best we had in Europe. The neighborhood is not the greatest although we felt no concern about safety.

Excellent location, comfortable room, knowledgeable staff.

This hotel is ideal in terms of access to Malpensa airport since the buses leave from the train station, just around the corner from the hotel. It’s also ideal if the plan is to use the trains.

Great hotel with convenient location

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Berna; room was nice and clean; good size bathroom; drinks in wet bar were complimentary altho you only get one per stay; breakfast buffet had a nice selection of breads/pastries/fruit, no hot items which was fine. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful as well as the bartender & breakfast staff. Very close to Central Station which was very convenient. Put 4 on comfort as I thought A/C could’ve been cooler since I’m from TX & we love our A/C.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Do visit the roof top of the Duomo - great views! Do not eat at the Galleria unless you want to pay a large fortune for that meal!

very satisfied

Conventiently located near train station and transportation to the airport. Very nice clean hotel, friendly and thoughtful staff. the executive suite across from the original building is well appointed and very well kept. The rooms are very small for my taste, but the bathroom was well done. Despite this i would use it again for a short stay.

Very Satisfied

Clean, modern hotel (we were housed in the new building across the street from the older one), with excellent management that is very interested in providing customer satisfaction. Room was clean, quiet, comfortable and attractive. Breakfast was varied and plentiful with cheerful service. Hotel is very convenient to Milan’s subway system and the central train station. We walked to the hotel from our train and walked back at the end of the stay to rent a car from the same station.

Top Hotel

One of the best hotels we ever stayed at. The staff was friendly & helpful. The mini bar was included in our hotel price. Our room amenities were awesome including bath robes & house shoes. Had a choice of pillows! Breakfast was excellent. The hotel is a short walk to the train or subway station. Wish we could have stayed there longer.

convenient but check out cleanliness

The Hotel is very convenient to the Centrale train station. I stayed there 2 different times and the 2nd time the room I was given had a dirty bathroom. The staff did come and clean the room when notified. The room was also too warm for me and the computer controlled air conditioning would not kick in soon enough. Overall, the convenience was worth it.

terrific hotel near Milan train station

Top-notch hotel, well deserving of its four (I believe) stars. Conveniently located near Milan train station, which was important to me, and also near a subway stop. The extensive breakfast buffet, which was included in the price, was the best I have ever seen at a hotel. Also, free soft drinks in the mini-fridge. If I am back in Milan, I would definitely stay here again.

Would recommend this hotel because...

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Berna and would certainly stay there again without hesitation. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet was excellent and had a large variety of both hot and cold foods including fresh fruit(we had canned at some other hotels). We took a day trip to Venice and found the Central Station easy walking distance and very convenient. There is also a metro stop so it is very easy to get around Milan from there. The hotel was full but I never felt crowded and the value for the money of this hotel was the best we found in Italy. The only negative is that there were not a lot of restaurants/night life in the area but that was not a big drawback to us.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

The soft drinks / water in your mini-fridge are free and they provide internet for free in the business center off the lobby - you just get a 30 minute free pass from the front desk.

Convenient hotel near main Milan rail station.

I like to get off the train, drop off my bag, and then wander. This hotel was perfect. Just 200 yards from the Central train station (and also the shuttle bus service to/from the various Milan airports), I didn’t have to worry about lugging my luggage around to a hotel near the main sights. This hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the Brera museum, and 25 minutes from the Cathedral. One could also take the subway (though I did not). The room (a single) was a bit small, but very charming and well-appointed. The breakfast was wonderful, with a wide range of items both hot and cold available--even fresh carrot juice! Though Milan’s not my favorite city, if I end up visiting there again I’ll certainly stay at Berna.
