Albergo Birillo

The Hotel Birillo is a small two-star family run hotel in the heart of La Spezia, very close to the sights and the pedestrian centre with its museums and shops. The road to Portovenere and the Cinque Terre ( Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monterosso) runs close by the hotel and just a 10 minute stroll away is the station from which trains to Tuscany leave hourly. The 2008 new management team has given the hotel an overhaul to ensure better facilities while trying to maintain competitive prices. We have a new reception and breakfast room with table or buffet service. We also hope to provide in the very near future a space for bikers/cyclists and a small garage for motorcycles, perfect for small touring groups headed for the Cinque Terre coast road who decided to use La Spezia as a base. The hotel has a bar, a reception desk manned 24 hours a day, fax and internet facilities and a left luggage room.

I would stay again

I would recomment this hotel and the city of La Spezia to anyone visiting the Cinque Terre. That is also my qualification. I did the Cinque Terre in a single, very long, day and would recommend a more relaxed pace. The city of La Spezia was far nor active and vibrant than any of the tourist guides seemed to suggest. This hotel is a bit of a walk from the central pedestrian route. It is small and the room was more than adequate for my needs. The owner was very helpful as was all the staff. I explored the city on my first day, did the Cinque Terre the next day, and left very early on the third day. The price was exceptionally good for the accomodations provided. The only drawback and qualification was the active roadway below my window. I had a double room with bath (small but adequate with an overflow shower drain in the center of the floor). I would stay again. It served my needs and at an excellent price.

La Spezia was ideal for visiting the Cinque Terre. I took the train to the town of Monterosso al Mare and headed back towards La Spezia. This section of the Cinque Terre is difficult and should be taken at a slow pace. The pathways are often very narrow and the ascents and declines require agility and strength. I think anyone who is active and somewhat agile can do it, but perhaps older travelers should plan several days moving from town to town. After Corniglia, the route gets somewhat easier and one can always take the train (with the Cinque Terre Card) if it’s too daunting at any point. The views are stunning similar to the Amalfi Coast except the hairpin turns are done walking in the Cinque Terre and by car or bus along the Amalfi Coast. A once in a lifetime experience. Get upset about garbage on the trail when you encounter it, but don’t let that spoil your experience.
