good access from Shinjuku, but.......
it is very convenient to travel by direct bus from Shinjuku train station, just outside west exit gate. But one must be aware that internal buses in the area ( Hakone-en) are not frequent and stop running before 4.00pm . nearby restaurants close early as well. if you are late, you have to take taxi (expansive) and eat dinner in the hotel , which again is expansive. if you are there for rest and leisure, it is perfectly ok. Beware also of the Hakone Free Pass. Not all internal buses and cruiseships in the lake are cover by this pass. there are different private operators.
recommended to see Mt. Fuji .From Hakone-en , take a bus near the hotel to Gotemba town in 50 mins.. The bus stop is next to the train station. from here , Mt. Fuji can be seen clearly. go through the train station to the other side of the station. take a dedicated bus to go up the mountain . it will stop at 5th Station where you can have a closer look of Mt. Fuji. The bus stops for 30 mins. When we were there, there was only two buses, one in the morning (9.30am) and 1.30pm. if you want to do some tracking , you have to go in the morning. the bus does not go up in winter.
