Deserted but clean
Our family had stayed at Hotel De Oro 18 years ago. At that time it was clean, needed updating and almost deserted. My husband and I decided it was time to re-visit it as a stop-over enroute back to Oregon. It is still the same today. You basically have the hotel to yourself. A little eerie because you don’t see anyone else. The room is a basic no frills room but is clean and the bed was comfortable. Nice courtyard and bell tower - unique. Unfortunately we forgot our own down pillows in the room. When I called to inquire about them, they said nothing had been turned in and that was the end of that.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Good rates and clean room. Really convenient to I-5. Don’t leave anything behind.

Ghost Town
This was an interesting place... a huge property with almost no one there, giving it a feeling of a ghost town. It’s laid out like a mission, with long rows of rooms around a huge tiled piazza. The bed was new and comfortable, but the carpet was awful and renovation overdue. Great price for an interstate overnight.

Interesting mix, but elegance still shines through
We stayed at the Hotel de Oro just one day during a windstorm, so we didn’t enjoy the lovely grounds as much as we might have. With the economy, maintenance has fallen behind and there was a lonely, desolate feel to the place, but great atmosphere and beauty. Excellent value.
