Better when remodeled

The hotel is about to be remodeled, so at the moment it is very average. However, it is is a great location for access to Yale and the downtown area. The parking garage is right across the street, but security is so good that it is hard to find your way out of it if you are leaving your car there. There are no signs to help you find your way out. We had no complaints about the hotel as it was clean and the bed was very comfortable.

Good hotel

The New Haven Hotel has an elegant lobby and nice-size rooms. The rooms are adequate but not so nicely appointed compared to many hotels where I stay. Yet, the staff was accommodating (though one clerk sent me on a "wild goose chase" looking for a local restaurant that he recommended. Bottom line: satisfactory hotel that is convenient and a reasonable value. I will stay there again most likely.

Best place to stay if you are visiting Yale

This was my first trip to New Haven when I was visiting Yale university for job interviews. One of the potential employer suggested this hotel to me and with no doubts I would recommend this hotel to anybody who wants to visit Yale.

New Haven Hotel in dire need of renovation

I found my hotel room to be unattractive, uncomfortable, inconvenient, and outdated. It had the feel of a roadside motel rather than the comfortable, fairly modern hotel that I expected. Several electric outlets did not function. I had to call management to change my stained linen, the tiny television set was swallowed by an oversized cadenza. Although the front desk assistant informed me that this hotel was slated for massive renovations, I think it is a good idea that it closed its doors until this happens.

Convenient and quiet

I was looking for a hotel that was close to Yale University and was very comfortable at New Haven Hotel. The furnishings are a bit worn about the edges, but the staff are very friendly and helpful. It was a quiet and peaceful stay -- a relaxing place to lay my head during a stressful business weekend. And it’s location is incredibly convenient.

Decent if you don’t expect too much

There aren’t many hotels in the immediate vicinity. I chose it because I was attending a conference at the Omni around the corner but it was completely booked. Overall the NHH is a good value. But don’t expect much. It is an aged place, with thin walls and carpets that look like they’ve seen many snowy winters. Stand up showers are vinyl-lined. Restaurant is open for breakfast only (not that I like hotel restaurants, but it’s indicative). One of the floors has evidently been subcontracted as a convalescent facility. All that said, I had no problems with my stay and appreciated the ability to walk to Yale and surrounding amenities. Basically if you can’t get a room at the Omni, or don’t want to pay that, the NHH is a good option.

Nice hotel, good location

The hotel was very near campus, and the room was clean and the air-condition was fine. Overall quality of the hotel was good. However, the hotel front desk was kind of unpolite and very very slow. So I was kind of disappointed by the service of the employees.

Not the best place to stay in New Haven.

I chose this hotel due to proximity to the Yale New Haven hospital, and non-availability of rooms in other hotels due to urgency on my trip . Although the room was spacious, they were not clean at all. Carpet had multiple stains. The glasses were not clean. Telephone was not working. Although they provided free wireless internet, it had to be re-connected every few minutes. When i stayed here earlier this month, the hotel had turned off the heating completely. The room was cold for me and i had to argue with the hotel staff before they turned it on hours later. Would not recommend to anyone to stay at this hotel for any reason.

Quaint Hotel in Heart of New Haven

Spent one night at the hotel - nice sized room - a bit antiquated but cozy. The bedcover reminded me of one I had as a child - white cotten chenille - i loved it. Outside my room was a large living room great for larger parties who would like to hang out together. The staff was kind and courteous and the food in the hotel very tastey - a grilled sandwich on whole grain bread was especially good.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

This hotel is in walking distance of the New Haven Green, the Yale Quad, Yale Rep and Palace Theaters. Resonable parking overnight in the adjacent garage.

terrible customer service

We got checked out of the hotel a day early (while we were out and about in town) and when we returned that night and couldn’t gain access to our room the security made a big scene about how we were already checked out. Luckily, I saved the receipt and had proof that we still had one more night left there. We didn’t get so much as an apology from the staff for the mix-up. Also, the so-called valet took at least 10 minutes to acknowledge our presence each time we needed our car.

Simple but decent quality close to Yale

While attempts at formality and stuffy florals seem to be stuck in the 80s and could use some updating, the New Haven Hotel’s rooms were spacious and clean for the price. We paid a price comparable to lower-end national chains, and well below many of the higher end chain hotels in the area, which perhaps made the features of an elevator, helpful staff, and valet parking very welcome. While there is little in the immediate block of the hotel, it is quite close to the Yale campus, which is probably the only reason to stay there. If you want to save money and still get a decent room in a good location, go for this hotel.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Given the reputation of New Haven, it was worth it to valet park at the hotel, finding other parking open late at night in the immediate area was very difficult.

Pleasant hotel

This hotel was a decent hotel. The problems that we found when we stayed over the Labor Day weekend were that they did not serve dinner, which was quite inconvenient, the restaurant was only open for breakfast. The room we were assigned had a strong smell of cigarette smoke, although it is a non-smoking hotel. People are still smoking in their rooms.Customers who smoke in their rooms should be penalized with extra charges for smoking. Others who come behind them should not have to breathe that in. Also there was a very big stain on our carpet floor, which should have been taken care of long ago. The hotel was pleasant though, we informed them of the problem and our room was changed. The lap pool is just wonderful and the warm rehabilitation pool felt great. It was a charming hotel and in the heart of everything. Nice places to eat in the vicinity and right around the corner is a movie theater. I recommend this hotel for when you just need a break from your everyday life and want to relax.

Not terribly impressed

I stayed here on a business trip where I needed to be close to Yale’s campus. It is only a few blocks from downtown New Haven, but it straddles a nice downtown neighborhood and a not-so-nice neighborhood. The service was nothing special - I had a ton of bags and no one offered to help me with them. There were stains on the carpet, but otherwise the room was in okay condition. Overall the hotel just seemed like it needed some updating. Also - the hotel offers free wireless, but you constantly had to log in again and the service wasn’t that great. The business center had only one computer that was almost always in use. I wouldn’t recommend for a business traveler that needs to stay connected.
