Very Basic!
Although the Hotel is close to all Edinburgh has to offer.....It was Very Basic! The mattress was so old and worn out, I had to ask for another blanket and comforter to put beneath me! There is major construction going on behind the Hotel and the workers started at 7 am each day! I do not suspect the work will be done until Dec. 2009! Bring your earplugs!

Disappointing
We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Positives -the location is very convenient for sightseeing, located on a quiet street, and has some of the old world charming lacking at the more modern hotels. Numerous negatives, but I will focus on what I consider to be the most important - cleanliness and service. The lobby and halls are lovely and appear to be recently renovated. I was very encouraged on our initial walk to our room. Our room was another story - substantial mold in the bathroom, dirty bedspread, layers of dust and cobwebs. From a convenience standpoint, it lacked any towel bars or hooks and the large furniture overpowered the room limiting the usable space. The staff was not helpful and seemed put out if we asked questions (Such as "Can you tell us the location of a nearby internet cafe?") Our room was in the "J" wing which is accessable by descent down a spiral staircase - warning to those who cannot carry their own luggage or have mobility limitations. There is no bell service for assistance. Although temporary, the hotel is next door to a large construction project. If you are staying here in the next 6 months or so, inquire about location of your room in relation to this construction.
Traveler's tip on dining
Nearby "Howies" restaurant on Waterloo is quite good and is striking architecturally. Also nearby for coffee in the morning is Cafe Camino - on a side street behind John Lewis.
