Great location, gorgeous grounds
Our room was tiny, but didnt spend much time there. Nice cozy sitting room in the main building with fireplace, great breakfast room and food - great place to sit and chat with friends over leisurely breakfast. Beautiful grounds.

Interesting hotel with limitation
The hotel is quite unique and interesting. It is a B&B of large scale. The garden is beautiful. The service was excellent. The frontdesk clerk showed us our room in person and helped us carry the luggage. The hotel has its limitations though. At least in the room I stayed in, there was no wifi but a wired network connection. However the connection wasvery very slow. The hot water suddenly ran out when I was showering, so I had an unforgettable experience showering in cold water in a chilly Berkeley fall morning. The TV was of the quite old type also. Overall it is an interesting place, depending on what you want.

A welcome discovery
Having driven up and down University Avenue about 1000 times, I thought of lodging in Berkeley as a pretty sleazy prospect. The Rose Garden is far enough away from that "gourmet ghetto" squalor, yet within easy walking distance of Telegraph Ave and the UC campus, as well as an interesting 15-minute walk from the Ashby BART. A big beautiful rambling old palm-shaded Victorian mansion complex, lacking some newfangled amenities (the breakfast, for example, is your basic bacon-and-eggs-in-a-steam-tray affair, and the coffee is execrable, and theres no wireless in the rooms) but an honest value nonetheless.
Traveler's tip on nightlife
Its pretty dead in the immediate vicinity, even on a Saturday night.
