Good hotel - convenient to mexican border crossing
best thing about the hotel is that it is conveniently located to the Matamoros Mexico border crossing - we left our car parked at the hotel and walked across the border to mexico. The hotel was nice, the people were helpful - and all nice - but we liked the convenience to within walking distance of the mexican border crossing.

I would recommed if...
I would recommend this Hotel only if you need to be very close to the border with Mexico, you can actually walk to any of the two bridges that connect USA with Mexico. Other than that, the bathtub was filthy, we had to clean it with Lysol before stepping in it, there was no blow-dryer in any room, no iron, they said they had Wi-Fi for a fee, but it never worked, we had to use the internet on a nearby hotel which it was free.

Okay
Good location if you want to be close to downtown Brownsville and the bridge to Mexico right over the Rio Grande. This place is VERY no frills, however. No coffee maker and not even an alarm clock! Cable TV selection was okay. When I stayed there it was pretty quiet. It is next door to a Tex-Mex restaurant chain. If not for that, the dining options would probably be pretty limited in the very immediate vicinity.
Traveler's tip on dining
For those who like Tex-Mex food try Dannys next door.

Run down Motel 8
This is an old Motel 8! The give away was when the old Motel 8 Lighted Sign came through the Univeristy Inns and Suites banner hanging over the sign (if we had been so lucky). The key given to us was a Taco Cabana card with a stip on the back of the card. The sheets were so thin that there were spots on them that were see through if not worn through! The bedspreads were yuk! Dont get me started ont he carpet! When I saw the bathroom I was looking for the Lysol and Clorox! On the sign...underneath the translucent University Inn sign was a claim of free breakfast. When I asked what time breakfast was available the lady said you get coffee if you are luck! True they have a pool but why would you do that when the beach is so near. Oh and we had to move the table from in front of the antique air-conditioner to get it to blow a little bit more luke-cool air towards us...our stay was in JULY!
