Excellent Value Hotel
I really enjoyed my stay at the Alster Hof (as a tourist, not business traveler). The staff was extremely professional and efficient. The rooms were not at all luxurious, but very clean and in good condition. Its location is magnificent (1 min away from the Binnenalster and a 5 min walk from Jungfernstieg). The breakfaast buffet was gorgeous. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Good location, bad room
The hotel is situated withing walking distance of many destinations. It was convenient to both the subway and regional train stations. Our complaint was that in August w/o air conditioning we needed to sleep with the windows open. Our room had a window on the street behind, which was an access street to a restaurant & bar scene. That led to late night loud voices and early morning recycling dumps (many dumps of many beer bottles at 3:30am). Also, the T-mobile hotspot (wireless provider at the hotel) didn’t work in our room (back corner of the building) and since it is not charged through the hotel, we could not get our money back.

Excellent value
This hotel is well-situated on the Esplanade and offers good value for the money. My room was small, almost cramped though certainly adequate. The room faced the street, which meant some noise from the large bar down the street celebrating a boisterous Oktoberfest. This hotel is better suited for casual travellers, students and tourists than for business travel. There is no internet connection in the rooms,for example, though one computer is available to guests in the commons area. The staff was friendly, the breakfast buffet was huge, and the room was immaculate. The inner harbor and high-end shops are just around the corner, and the hotel is within walking distance of the Dammtor train station (Caution: this is not the main or Hauptbahnhof but a secondary station) and the University. All in all, I had a good stay and would recommend this little hotel highly.
