not impress

we where at the hotel for a week and I had personally requested upon booking that we wanted an ocean view.the rquest could have been accomadated as we went: 1.not on a peak season, june 2009 2. the length of time we stayed in the hotel. 3. they gave us 3rd floor facing the pool 4.not a very good selection of food in the restaurant. although the front desk knew we where not please with the room no effort was done to remedy the situation. coming all the way from the states for the length of time we stayed there we expected a better room after expressing this was the first trip to cairns.

make sure you get the correct room that you have requested specially if it is a resort with the ocean as its main attraction!!!!!!!!!!!

On esplanade, a short walk to shops and dining. Rooms are nice, but the exterior in need of painting. Shows signs of age. Stayed here 6 years ago when it was better. Still a solid 3 star.

Great Place to Stay.

Overall this hotel was a great place to stay. The hotel was basically located on the Esplanade and we were able to walk everywhere. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Reef terminal where all the boats depart. Our room was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful in booking taxi’s for us. Very satisfied with this hotel and my trip to Australia and would definitely stay here again.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you can do an early dinner, most places will offer a discount if you eat at a certain time, usually during the hours of 5-7.

Not what it seems...

Their website portrays all three Rydges as very classy and selective hotels, but its very far from that. However, I got what I needed: rest, beautiful view, peace and quiet, close enough to the esplanade as well as the city center. And I just jogged to the other Rydges to use their gym facility. Don’t expect 5-star, more like 2.5/3. Very casual and laid back front desk service, but helpful with whatever you need. For the price, you can’t ask for more. Stay here if you want simple, no glam. Avoid if on honeymoon or looking for luxury.

Relatively good location in Cairns, but hotel showing its age

Very accommodating from a service perspective. Hotel hallways very musty smelling. Rooms need to be updated and better kept. Would still recommend to others with this understanding.

Great Location Great Hotel

This will be my seventh stay at the Rydes and would reccommend it. It is clean and right close to shopping and food. Be careful not to book the Rydes Tradewinds Esplande as this is a different property, the one you want is Rydes Tradewinds.

If you have a free day do the river trip down the tully with Raging Waters or R&R Rafting.

Just what I expected

Hotel was great - reasonable price - had great ocean view. The staff was very helpful. It was a short walk to town and shopping. I would recommend this as a nice hotel and an excellent choice for the price.

A nice hotel in a good location

The hotel and room were very stisfactory. It is well located at one end of the Esplanade and commercial area. Lots of restruants and shops an easy walk away.

I would recommend this hotel

This is a real nice hotel but it is a bit dated. The people were nice to work with. The hotel charges you for every little thing, such as towels to use at the pool. I felt like I was a bit nickel and dimed to death. The esplande in front is great for picking up buses, etc. It is about a five to ten minute walk to where the action is but it is a nice walk. We got charged for an extra movie and I didn’t catch it on the bill so please be careful when checking out.

Clean, comfortable and close to everything

We were quite pleased with the Rydges Tradewinds in Cairns. It was walking distance to everything and all the tour groups we used came right to the hotel for pick up. Staff were very friendly. The breakfast buffet was fine. Tour desk in lobby has all you need to book any tour right on the spot. One note, the water view is not much but you need the upgrade to get in a internet capapble room. This side of Cairns is a bit mucky and muddy until you head out to the reef. It was nice to have the breeze off the water however.

Sunlover Cruises offered an amazing day at the reef and the Scenic Railway trip/Sky Rail was simply the best. If you want to truly interact with the koalas, kangaroos, birds, reptiles and butterflies...head out for this trip. It was amazing!
