Good location and value

This is the second time I stayed here with my family, the first was in 2007. Since then the rooms have been painted and redecorated, which was a pleasant surprise; our room was large by London standards. However continental breakfast was downsized and is now almost spartan, with fresh fruit and yogurt no longer available, but the rolls, cold cereal, and juice are enough to get started. Location close to Lancaster Gate tube stop and Paddington Station is a definite plus. The street is relatively quiet for a large city and Mitre Pub is nearby as well as other good restaurants. Oxford Hotel staff members are courteous and helpful, too. This hotel is a good value for price, although there is no lift to upper floors, and I would stay there again.

Pick up a tour map at the front desk as it has 20% discounts to attractions and some fine restaurants. Oyster card or travel card (tube only, not the one with attraction admissions) are good values and the best way to get around London quickly.

A nice little hotel at a nice location

The hotel was conveniently located, within walking distance from the Paddington station and is near to a Tube station. The neighborhood is quiet. You can also walk to the Kensington Gardens easily from the hotel. The service was great. The hotel gave me a huge room on the first floor. I don’t know if the same sized rooms were assigned for other people. The room was comfortable enough. There were rooms on the floor below street level; I don’t know what the views are like in those rooms, or if I would like those room. The only matter of improvement that I could think of would be to improve the water pressure in the shower. The hot water was kind of weak, and it was not a very satisfying shower.

Good Location, Great Service

I’ve stayed at this hotel twice and both times have had excellent service. From carrying many suitcases upstairs, to getting an extra fan, the service was excellent. It has a great location, walking distance to Paddington Station.

Great budget hotel

We recently stayed here and were very pleased. There were three of us traveling and we were able to get a room with four twin beds (very hard to come by in London). It had a full bathroom, a tv, a microwave, a mini fridge and a hot pot to make tea and coffee. They also offer a small continental breakfast for guests. The room was very clean and the service was great.

Traveler's tip

The nearest Tube stop is Lancaster gate which is a very short walk away. Also there is an internet cafe called the Video Cafe down the street that has a printer (this was great so we were able to check in for our flight coming home). There is a fabulous Italian restaurant a few doors down called Taormino’s.

Good Bed & Breakfast-style hotel

I have to start by saying there is no elevator and the bathroom was seriously tiny. I know this is Europe, so I had prepared for small, but the bathroom in our room was about 3 x 5 ft. Having said that, we very much enjoyed our stay at The Oxford. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was kept very clean. The breakfast is good (of the cereal and bread variety). There was also a fan in our room which was great. We stayed in late May and were quite comfortable with the windows open and the fan on. The neighborhood is also great with a cupcake/internet cafe and a laundromat nearby. The nearest tube station is just a couple of blocks away, as is Hyde Park. Great location, great price.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

I definitely recommend buying an Oyster card if you’re going to stay for at least a few days. It saved us much time and hassle not having to buy tickets. The tube is extremely efficient and we were able to get all over London just using it, even though the Oyster can also be used for the bus system.

Do not stay here

This hotel was horrible. The rooms were tiny, the beds were uncomfortable, the breakfast was bad, and the bathroom was nearly unusable. There is NO internet in this hotel. One front desk manager was helpful; the other wasn’t. I don’t see how this could be a three star hotel. Fork out a little bit more for a better hotel. Trust me on this.

Traveler's tip

Don’t stay here. Stay at the Hyde Park Corus up the street.

Not impressed

Near a hostel than a hotel.Great location, clean, tiny rooms, no lift. We were at the third floor and the hotel do not have staff to help us with the luggage. The stairs are large and narrow. In the announce says internet surcharge but they do not have internet at all. No phone in the room. Only a pay one in the stairs. For the budget not bad, but not enough.

Remember no elevator, so ask for a room in the 1st. floor!

Trust Me - Must Stay

We read the reviews and stayed at the Oxford. Location - Excellent. Walk to and eat at The Swan for the London Pub experience. Metro and Buses stop at the end of the street - 5 min walk. Internet access is two doors down - 1 hour for 1 pound. Souvenir and snack shops right on the street. 5 min walk to Paddington. Room - We got the quad room and it was great. Nice size. Hot water in the bathroom. Front staff was very helpful. Asked to have the shower drain unclogged and it was done by the time we got back. Light breakfast is provided by the hotel. There is no question I would stay here again. We were there for three days and loved it. I will recommend this to anyone going to London.

Traveler's tip on shopping

The buses and metro at the end of the street drop you off right in the heart of the shopping district, i.e. Oxford Street, Regent Street. The big bus sightseeing tour has a stop right outside of Paddington Station.

Nice Budget Hotel

Oxford Hotel is a hotel that I always tries to stay at whenever I come to London. It’s clean and the staff is nice. The down part is that it’s no lift so I don’t recommend it for families with small children. I like the fact that it’s located on a quiet street very close to the beautiful Kensington Garden.

Nice Little London Hotel Convenient to Underground and Paddington Station

We had a quad room that was fine for our family. It was cheerful and clean. Tea making facilities and hair-dryer. Lots of stairs- need to be in good condition. Breakfast was ok- staff was very friendly and helpful. Clean towels daily but at least one bathmat had a hole in it and one of the sheets had a permanent stain on it. If you open your windows at night there is some noise from the street level restaurants.

Traveler's tip

Located near Paddington Station and Lancaster Gate Tube. Good restaurants in the area but beware of some tourist traps nearby.

Why stay anywhere else for this money?

Newly painted and recarpeted--looking great. Good service: clean, fresh towels, soap, etc. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. There’s someone on the desk ’til midnight, but you key can open the front door. Breakfast is adequate: toast, rolls, juice, cheese, coffee & tea, but if you want it, they order an "English Breakfast" from next door for 3 pounds. And there are several cafes nearby. And a laundromat. We would go back for certain and plan to do so!!!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Get an Oyster Card. It’s definitely worth it!!!

Would stay there again

Our family stayed at this hotel for a week in March/April. While there is no lift and the breakfast is cold cereals and breads, it worked out fine. The location is great with a couple of tube stops close and several buses that run from nearby to all major attractions. There are several markets and restaurants nearby and the minifridge comes in handy for keeping waters and sodas cold. The street can be noisy at night, but our kids had no trouble sleeping. I had earplugs and they worked great. Would stay here again.

Traveler's tip on dining

Our favorite restaurant was a chinese restaurant on Praede Street. It’s in between the hotel and Paddington station.

Perfect for a London Sightseer

The Oxford is located in an excellent area for sightseeing in London. It is within 5 minutes walking distance of 2 Underground Stations (Lancaster Gate on the Central Line and Paddington on the District, Circle and Hammersmith Lines) and Hyde Park. There are several restaraunts, grocery stores and pubs nearby (I already miss The Mitre). The continental breakfast is very simple, but I wasn’t staying there to be in the hotel 24/7. The staff is very helpful and friendly and the room was very clean; housekeeping did a great job. The room was standard small for Europe, but it’s perfect if all you need is a bed, sink toilet and shower. The microwave and minifridge also came in very handy. I would definitely stay there again.

Great little hotel

We spent 2 nights at the Oxford hotel in London to break up a long flight to Italy from the west coast of the US. The location of the hotel was great, we took the tube from Heathrow and returned to Heathrow the same way (Lancaster Gate station) The hotel is walking distance to Hyde park, a big treat for my younger sons. The in-room fridge and microwave were handy for quick meals and snacks. The bathroom and linens were very clean and comfy, staff friendly and helpful. If you don’t mind walking up a few flights of stairs, this is a nice small hotel at a budget price.

There is a laundromat across the street so you can pack light and do a quick load of laundry when needed.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

THE GOOD: We picked this hotel for a two day stay based on the traveler’s reviews/recommendations on this site. We were not disappointed. This is a typical European travel hotel -- small rooms intended for tourists who primarily want a place to sleep and store their luggage while site-seeing. It is in a good location, about one-third of a mile (downhill) from Paddington Station, with trains direct from Heathrow. A cab ride is less than 5 pounds. The underground from either Paddington station or from Lanciester Gate, and Hyde Park are both under 1/3 mile. The decor is basic, but fresh, and the hotel is well maintained. The continental b-fast is just that: muffins, instant coffee, tea (of course) an orange drink for OJ, cold cereal/milk. You can order a full English bkfast for 3 pounds delivered to the hotel. Many small restaurants/pubs with food, take-aways, etc. are nearby. Hotel staff were friendly-customer service oriented, and willingly stored our bags after check out while we continued site. THE BAD: There is no clerk on duty after midnight until somewhere around 6 am, but the outer doors are secured and your room key will give you access during this period. THE UGLY: No elevator/lift. With some rooms in the basement, and others on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, if you have lots of heavy luggage or limited mobility, you may find the upper floors a bit much. There are rooms on the ground floor as well, and we found the first (to us the "second) floor, fine without a lift.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

You can take the Heathrow express non-stop in 15 minutes from Heathrow to Paddington for 15 pounds, but for 25 minutes and 5 brief stops you can take the "connect" for less than 7 pounds. At current conversion rates (Nov 07) that is quite a savings in U.S. $$$ for an extra 10 minutes of travel.

Great Location!!!

First the bad news, we were on the 4th floor and the walk up the steep and narrow steps is not fun. Second, the pillows are rock hard and only an inch thick. I encourage anybody to bring their own pillows. Now the good news, everything else was great. You couldn’t ask for a better location. We were within a short walking distance (5 min. max) of 2 tube stations, Paddington and Lancaster Gate, which gave us access to 6 or 7 lines, making travel around London very easy. Plus, there are so many great little cafes, pubs and restaurants around so whether we wanted to eat finer food (try Olio’s) or just casual food (Taste of India, or pub food at the Swan) you had your choice. The service was fantastic. We needed a wake up knock (there are no phones in the room) and they were very prompt. There is no internet service in the hotel specifically, but it’s close enough to pick up on the free wireless from one of the cafe’s located around the corner, which we took advantage of.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Get the London Pass with transportation! It saved us over $300 dollars on transportation and entry fees. We took the Salisbury, Bath, and Stonehenge tour and it was awesome. Very well organized, and well worth the money. There is a Barclays Bank ATM next to the Mitre Pub. Barclays does not charge you ATM fees and you get a fair and current exchange rate.

Good deal

Hotel staff were very pleasant. Our room was fairly spacious for a London hotel and the bathroom was clean. The carpet could have used a good steam cleaning, and the street noise was loud, but that is to be expected in central London. The location was great. The breakfasts were pretty blah, bring fruit from the local shops to enhance the experience.

Wonderful experience at Oxford

Quaint, cozy, clean, safe...we went to visit London, not the hotel. Oxford is centrally located to everything one would want to see. It was everything we needed at the right price. If we go back to London, we will stay at the Oxford Hotel.

Quaint, clean but no elevator

We really liked that we could have a family room which included 4 twin beds. The hotel is very quaint. There was not an elevator which meant that we had to do 74 steps up to our room. This was a real workout! Nice people and very clean rooms. Breakfast was fair, included 3 types of dry ceral, rolls, coffee and orange juice. The location could not be beat, just a short way to Hyde Park and just around the corner was the tube station and the bus stop. I would definately go there again.
