Exceptional service.
This is the second time Ive stayed in a Shangri-La Hotel in China. The staff is friendly and helpful to those who do not speak Mandarin. This hotel is older than the one I stayed in previously. Some of the furniture/fixtures are somewhat aged but the room was always very clean. The service is what made my stay comfortable and pleasant.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
The hotels restaurant food was average and expensive. Stay at the hotel but venture out in Beijing for a full dining experience.

My favorite hotel in the world
This Shangri-La in Beijings Haidian district may not be a jewel in the hotel chains crown, but, we feel like royalty when we stay here. The Horizon Club is one of the nicest and best deals in the city and is a welcome respite from the hectic demands of travel, business and family in Beijing. The work staff are friendly and very helpful. The health club is fantastico!! It is the only hotel in Beijing with a lovely outside garden based on the old courtyard style of Chinese architecture, you may feel like you are staying in the Summer Palace! Weve been staying here since 1998. Much has changed in Beijing for better and worse, but the outstanding service and accomodations at the Shangri-La have only improved.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Take an early taxi to the Summer Palace and then take the canal boat back to Purple Bamboo Park for more landscaped beauty. See the water cube around 3:30 pm on a weekday, minimal lines. Taxi to Chaoyang and shop at Ya Show dept store for excellent bargains.
