OK for the money, if you get an Expedia deal!
The hotel itself, especially the original building, is fairly attractive, in nicely landscaped quiet countryside. Our guest room was mostly ok, if a bit dated in decor and bathroom fixtures; however, the bed was not very comfortable, with a strangely squishy mattress, boingy springs, and slide-off edges. If a good matress is the bottom line in a hotel, then Buxted doesnt get satisfactory marks. --The restaurant unfortunately has only fixed price meals at 32 or 42 pounds, no ala carte ordering permitted: this proves very inconvenient over a period of days when one does not want that much food (or expense). --This hotel concentrates on conferences, events, and (tacky) weddings, a fact that does not promote calm or an elegant atmosphere. There was loud noise and music until 2am one night. All this said, the staff, mostly young and foreign, are very friendly and helpful.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
You need a car to get around---and if you have one, there is a lot to see: houses, castles, gardens. Sissinghurst, the garden of Vita Sackville-West, is magnificent, if you can manage to see it through all the people, who arrive in busloads from all over Europe. Just as lovely and more horticulturally surprising is Great Dixter, a fabulous garden created by Christopher Lloyd, with considerably fewer visitors. Go in the morning when they open (11am) for the best chance of a peaceful visit.
