Short walk to the historic area
We traveled to Williamsburg by train, and wanted a hotel near enough to the historic area to be able to walk back and forth. The Patrick Henry Inn is only about 4 blocks from the Capitol, so it was very convenient. Its a little too far to walk from the train station to the hotel, so we took a taxi, but it cost only $6. The room was spacious, the price quite reasonable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was basically fruit, pastries, and bagels. It was OK. We thought we could walk directly over to the Visitor Center, but found out that you need to go to the shuttle bus stop at the Capitol to get to the path that goes to the Visitor Center. (Once you buy a ticket, you can take the shuttle bus around the perimeter of the historic area.)

Too bad
Ive stayed at the Patrick Henry Inn from time to time for about the past twenty years--its conveniently located just outside Colonial Williamsburgs historic district--and have found it to be quite comfortable in the past. However, the Inn is now owned by a time-share resort company, and the building seems to be in "gentle decay." The paint and wallpaper are tired-looking. Maid service stops between 2 and 3 pm, so your room wont be cleaned after that time--even if you request it. The mattresses are old and need to be replaced, and my bathroom was not properly cleaned (all of this I reported to the front desk).
