Great stay at the Bloomsbury

I had a delightful experience at this hotel. The front desk staff was very helpful, and the recommendations from the concierge for getting around London were great. Hotel is quaint (little tiny elevator) and views do not have any particular view, but my interest was in a safe, clean place to sleep, and it was all that!!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The location is terrific. 2 short blocks from the metro station, bus stop directly in front of the hotel, next door to a very inexpensive internet cafe, just around the corner from the British Museum, short walk to a delightful little restaurant (Cagney’s), where we sat outside and had dinner while watching people at the outside area of little pubs on either side of the restaurant. Russell Square park is just a few steps from the front door, on the opposite side of the street.

Not worth it!

This hotel initially drew me in because it was advertised as close to some of the attractions of London. This was relatively true, as we were able to walk to almost everything. (within 2-5 miles). However, we had to switch rooms FOUR times! There was no AC and we requested a room with air. We had to literally sit in the hall and wait for Housekeeping to clean the room only to find out that there were actually GUESTS in that room! The hotel seemed very unorganized overall and were not quick to fix things that didn’t work (like our telephone - in TWO rooms!) My recommendation, there are plenty of hotels to choose from closer to restaurants and bars that might actually have decent customer service...this would NOT be my choice!

Traveler's tip on dining

Many of the bars/restuarants around this hotel only serve food until 4pm, then they become pubs only. We had to walk FAR to find restaurants that still served food closer to 7 or 8pm. Keep that in mind!

Pleased, but not thrilled; yes, I would return

Not the Ritz, but a serviceable hotel centrally located and convenient to transportation and the British Museum

Traveler's tip on dining

The hotel restaurant suffices nicely, but if not, the area offers a multitude of other options, like he Pizza Express nearby and a supermarket not too far down the road

Great location but nothing special about the stay other than that.

The best part of this hotel was the location, there was a lot of stuff to do around the area and close to two tube stations. The lobby, hotel/restaurant and staff were nice enough, but the room was small, with a double bed (kind of hard), desk and wardrobe, there was just enough room to have a small walk-way around the bed. With our luggage, it was definitely cramped, but I could deal with that. The bathroom was small, but decent enough, the only problem was that the shower drain didn’t work very well and there was always about an inch and a half of water while showering. Because the shower only had a bin for about two inches of water, it was easy to get everything in the bathroom wet. The worst part of the stay had to be the fact that we could hear everyone coming and going because all of the doors (including the "fire doors" through the hallways) slammed very loudly! We were on the first floor, which the maids started cleaning at around 8:00am. Every time they would come through the hall ("slam, slam, slam!!!"), or go into a room ("slam!"), come out of a room to get things from their cart ("slam!"), only to go back in a minute later ("slam!")...you get the drift. While we wanted to get a lot of sightseeing in during the day, we still wanted to be able to sleep and relax in our room. Another downside to the room was that there was only one double outlet in the entire room (including bath), and the TV took up one of the outlets.

Good hotel for the price.

Hotel is old, but was under renovation. Our rooms were small, but they served their purpose. Rooms were very clean. Housekeeping was fast and efficient. beds were very comfortable. Service was good. Very helpful. Would consider staying there again.

Great for families. The area is very clean. Rooms are sma;ll, but comfortable. Close to transportaion and dining out.

location, location, location

In the middle of everything, charming old style hotel. Clean, but no air conditioning, and baths need redo. Furnishings are modest but you do feel like you’re in England and not a Holiday Inn.

Seek alternate accomodations ...

The hotel location is good for seeing most of the sights that London has to offer and by comparison, has reasonable room rates. It is close to the "Tube", (underground rail), bus routes and within walking distance of SOHO and the theatre district. The hotel was a bit older than we had anticipated and is in need of some modernization and up-grades. Some of the staff was less than courteous and not well informed about the local area. There also appeared to be a bit of a language barrier, even though we were all speaking English. PS: Don’t ask anyone to "leave you a message" at the hotel as the voice mail system was still flashing a message for someone who had stayed there a month before us.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

We recommend getting an "Oyster" travel pass from the mass transit system. It is a "magnetic swipe card" the gets you access to the "Tube". You can travel specified "Zones" on the underground as well as all street level buses and some "light rail" transportation.

DEPENDS ON WHICH ROOM

Had two different rooms during our stay. The one facing SOUTHHAMPTON ROW was small, hot, with windows that barely opened. The other faced a small street and was twice the size and had a pair of windows that opened and let in fresh air. In one room the toilet barely flushed, in the other the shower knobs were reversed. There is only ONE elevator for the six floor hotel and it is very small and can require a 15 minute wait during busy times. The front desk staff is generally detached and slow. The breakfast is ridiculously overpriced. Even so, the Hotel is wonderfully located and, with exception of breakfast, a good value.

Reserver room WITHOUT breakfast as there are many small places in neighborhood

Comfortable and convenient!

I really liked this hotel and would definitely go back. The beds were very comfortable and the room size was OK for London. I was pleasantly surprised at the water pressure in the shower. Much better than other London hotels I’ve stayed in. The Cellar Bar had just opened its doors the week before our stay and we found it a great place to kick back and discuss the days events. The staff could not have been better and I give them an A+. We had breakfast included with our rooms and it was always good and a lot of variety. Very happy customer.

Traveler's tip on dining

Just a few steps away from the hotel are some really good places to eat. There is an Indian Cuisine place on the same street just up from Subway. Starbucks is next door but I much preferred the more quiet coffey shop 3-4 doors down from it. We all enjoyed the Queen’s Lager after the days spent in business meetings. And 2 doors up from it is a great Italian place. you don’t need to go far for good food.

Bed and breakfast

If you’re looking for an hotel to pass your time in, it’s definately not the place to go; Bed and breakfast is all you’re getting here. But you knew this when you booked a 2 star. Nevertheless the hotel is clean and the service is quite good (for the few things you can ask for). The rooms are a little bit too small, so be prepared to do some hill climbing over your luggage. For the rest, it’s of acceptable comfort and cleanliness. The breakfast buffet has a large choice of mainly British style dishes but if you get there early enough you’ll might also get hold of a "croissant" and a "petit pain". All in all a fair choice if you go to London to visit London (hotel is only a few minutes walk away from Holborn and Russel Square tube stations) and don’t intend to pass your time at a hotel spa or bar.
